New bike thoughts!

I would like to upgrade from a 250 ninja to something else.

I was considering D675 but the ergo is too much for DT riding (mostly work and the occasional outing with the wife ).

My other options (strongly considering them) are Street 675 rx, S1000R, Brutale 675 (would love dragster 800 but not sure yet with MV maintenance)

Do insurance costs factor at all into your decision?

Well definitely from a 250 i bet going to this list is pretty exciting for you, the d675 is a sports bike all the rest are naked bikes. Do you want to stay with the sports bike look or jump to a naked bike? I personally prefer the "SS" but naked bikes are very fun to ride as well, the s1000r and both the MV's are awesome machines. Do your own work what ever suits your taste and style/comfort/long or short rides /double with the wife/etc etc.

insurance is a factor but over 30 with a few years of experience and no claims (1 speeding though - minor) would be looking at about 50% more of what i am paying now (ballpark)

i personally would love the SS (damn D675 2013 no under the seat exhaust FU triumph) but i think for in traffic (toronto DT) not sure if i can justify it ergonomics wise - your thoughts?

naked i have been considering it for the past 6 mo - i like the S1000R but i am trying to justify usability vs cost (don't think I would track any of the bikes).
Overall as far as jumping from 250 to a higher cc engine (1000cc being a 400% increase in performance) - what should i be looking at (i understand skill is a huge factor and darwin has a way of making sure only the fittest survive - no offence to anyone)

Shamelessly self serving, but have looked at the Speed Triple :p

But seriously, of the bikes you've listed that S1000r wouldn't just be a big jump, it's more quantum leap. The D675 (and street triple 675) is far more refined than the MV 675's; if going MV triple the 800 is the way to go

I started drooling a bit - in all fairness you would part ways with the triumph but keep the aprc? i thought i found a speck of dirt on your bike , sadly, was my monitor, immaculate machine man

My friend had a d675

Traded it in for a street triple and loves it
Just as much fun as the d675 but with easier ergos

Everything has a price. I just put the Speedy up because I'm currently riding the Ape more ;)

It's 400% increase in engine capacity, more than that when it comes to performance. Ninja 250 has only about 27 hp while the S1KR has about 160 hp. S1KR is good if you are looking for a balance between comfort and performance but the jump is probably too big for you.

Technically it's a 300% increase in engine capacity... :D

A new rider with an MV Agusta. You won't be riding much! Go with the Triumph street triple or Daytona. Excellent transition out of the junior world.

Check out a Z1000, they seem to fly under the radar for some reason. The insurance category is much nicer on the wallet as well.

I think the triple is more and more pushing to #1 .. s1r is an overkill at the moment but love the look and imposing stance. MV I like but don't have a good understanding on the maintenence and have heard they are a bit temperamental (I will use the bike almost year round)

MV engine also sounds like it going to come apart at any moment when you're sat on it... not a huge concern, but if you don't like strange noises, stick with the triumph for a triple

I know a guy with a Brutale, it seems to be pretty reliable (except when it wouldn't start after winter storage even after the battery was on a tender) so far into the season

The Z800 is available here now as well

Agreed, not unreliable (for the most part) but certainly not refined.

That said, I think the biggest problem with MV in Canada is MV Canada. I know a guy who's Brutale 1090rr spent 6 months in the shop waiting for parts and warranty approval... it's a long story and special circumstances but troublesome non the less... and who knows how MV is going to come out of their most recent financial crisis..
