So my friend has 2001 kawi zx6r with 46,435km, that i am interested to buy but my only issue is the bike has been sitting for 2.5 years. Its been on stands and in the garage (not heated) and he lost the key to the bike. I know the bike is not stolen and he has the ownership and everything, I am new to the bike world and just wondering what would it cost to change the key cylinder. I am very hands on and would do the work my self, I have rebuild key cylinders for cars before and changed them, I'm just unsure if its worth me buying this bike for $2600.

Some advice would be nice Please

2600 isn't a bad price ... IF your buddy is the original owner on it or whoever he bought the bike from was the original owner, he should have been given the ID tag for the key. With that number you can go to the Kawi dealer and order a new key. I think its like 30 bucks (would be cheaper then changing the lock cylinder me thinks)

On to the sitting for 2 years... you'll need to do some basic maintenance. Its not alot of stuff just your basic stuff even if you rode the bike for 2 years you should do... if its been sitting for years and the carb bowls were not drained before storage i would suggest BEFORE starting the bike you take the carbs out and clean them. I would also say that the gas in the tank is probably old also and dipose of that at the same time. You'll need to do an oil change, coolant change and also change the fluid in the brakes. Your chain and sprockets would have no additional wear on it UNLESS he dunked it in a salt pile before he stored it. you'll need to check the date code on the tires before you ride on it, if the date code of mfg was 5 years ago I would swap it. If they were new at the time of storage you should be fine on them now.

my 2 cents...
