National Post Article re Excessive Noise

Someone was telling me that California (I think or maybe it was some country in Europe) that your bike had to be OEM and if you changed the pipe it had to have a certain "government" stamp on it to show approval of state laws and it's legal to use. So if a Cop pulls you over and you have a Hindle pipe with the stamp then you are good but no stamp and you get a ticket.

I seriously do not understand how people can ride with straight pipes. How do they feel after they get off the bike?
That is truly a selfish and ignorant thing to do. They KNOW that bike is damn loud and clearly ZERO respect for their neighbors.

* I do appreciate the sound of a finely tuned machine or hell even a raw muscle machine.

The people that will go begin reading this article are probably just regular folk. They've been spoon-fed the obnoxious m/c rumble, shriek and ringading since the invention of two wheel thunder over 100 yrs. ago. If they're not up to speed by now, maybe they deserve to be dribbled on. What do you expect from journalism? It's always off kilter when reading something on a subject you know about.

I'm all too aware of the point you are making here - I just felt the need to voice my opinion against the status quo. It doesn't surprise me, the way the article was written, but that doesn't mean it need to be perpetuated.

No, it never needs to be perpetuated but always will be. The reason it irks is because motorcycling is a subject you're invested in. But the main thrust of the article was spot on in a general way m/c noise affects other people. We'll just have to agree to agree:eek:

the majority of people in north america can probably distinguish between a supersport, cruiser/harley, and tourer.
 
The point of articles like this, even in right-wings rags like the National Compost, is that society is getting fed up with these attention whores with their straight pipes and track exhaust.
They give motorcyclists a bad image, they make us all seem like self-involved a-holes.
This is all political fuel to ban motorcycles.

Frankly, Im looking hard at an electric bike in the near future. I test drove one in California and was really impressed.
 
Range needs to improve but a hybrid with a small charging motor could be cool
Lardy like the Burgman is a natural...lots of space for batteries etc. I think there was one done up.

I don't think there is a mcycle ban ( the insurance companies have done their worst already ) in the wind but noise limits on vehicles - damn right.

Loud pipes annoy the hell out of everyone having to hear them. If you think they don't bother people when you are at speed, you have another think coming. Everyone behind them is annoyed. Every house and farm and town they go past is annoyed.

I could barely make it through the article. Not surprised to see a proponent of a decibel-based noise law, which I am not necessarily opposed to. However, the author makes this complaint about the current leglislation: "To nail a motorcycle noise infraction police would have to be on hand to inspect a vehicle for faulty or illegal muffler installation." In what way does adding a decibel limit solve that problem?!

Further to the point, HOW is that a problem? Short from an outright ban in sales of aftermarket exhausts and legislating manufacturers into producing theirs to a spec for levels, what is the alternative?

You make noise, you get checked, you get ticketed. Innocent until proven guilty, and all that jazz.

Huh? I was addressing a flaw in the logic of the article - adding a decibel limit does not improve upon the enforceability of current legislation, in the scenario that the author puts forth which is that the need of an enforcement officer on-hand is a weakness.

I kept waiting for the author to blame Rob Ford for catering to the elitist dentist/accountant Wild Hog community...oh that's right, it wasn't a Star op-ed. :rolleyes:
