Mystery noise...

My streak of 5 years and 40,000 kms of relatively problem free riding have come to an end. My bike has developed a mystery noise. it sounds 'metallic' (almost like a piece of metal vibrating). I am pretty sure it's not a moving engine part as the noise is not in sync with the engine revs.

Anyway. I took it into the shop, and they concluded the same - it's not a moving engine part. They also concluded that it should not affect the bike's performance - they did throw the caveat in there though that they can't say for sure without tearing the bike down...

...and therein lies the kicker. It would cost me a pretty penny to find what the noise is. So there is where I sit right now. Do I ride with the noise and try the best I can to ignore the noise? Or do I let a shop tear the bike down on my dime to find the noise?

Not looking for answers really, but I needed to tell someone. I figured this was a sympathetic crowd.

Get the wrenches out and dig in!
I ignored a buzzing plastic sound for a couple weeks... And then one day I saw my horn bouncing down the highway behind me.

Get out a rag and brush. Thoroughly clean the bike top to bottom by hand. Any loose bits will likely become apparent through that process.

I was thinking of doing that actually, though not a complete teardown. Just start with exposed nuts/bolts. Tighten them, and see if that makes any difference. Also, see if any wiring is lose. Basically, look at all possible exposed parts. If that does not work, then I'll probably wait until the end of season to figure out what to do.

What's cheaper: dropping in a new engine or having a shop pull it apart for hours figuring it out. I'd just leave it and see if its gets worse. But, give it a thorough look over like others suggested.

8000 Km a year is your problem. The bikes just getting broke in. You need to ride that thing not keep it in the garage.
My bet is, is that its a vibration from the pipe or licence plate.

Take it to a different mechanic, a good mechanic should be able to pinpoint the noise with the proper tools.
I am only guessing, but it could be a loose spring in the clutch area or clutch dog vibrating.

Ride it. If it starts to get worse, stop riding. If not, you could always split it yourself this winter and learn some things. Tons of helpful tutorials all over the internet to help with fixing/modifying a motorcycle.

My old F4i had a rattling cam chain tensioner lifter that sounded like something like you're describing

What are you riding a monster? check the monster forums online, there are plenty of them. Does it sound like a metallic washer sound? If so, it may be something around or in the exhaust pipes if you are running the stock cans. I cant remember the exact part name but it sounds awfully similar t many posts i have read on those forums. Its worth a try and you can do it yourself.

yup, 09 monster 696. Stock pipes. Will post to the monster forums shortly. If you see/remember a particular thread, please PM it to me!

yup. will do. those forums helped me alot with my monster. Especially with my stupid exhaust valve error light lol . By the way your monster is totally bad *** in white love it
