My brother wants to give me his bike and I need opinions...

Most people would not recommend plugging the tire. Spend the extra dough and get a new tire

I've puts 1000's of km on plugged tires. I've never had a plug fail and have used both mushrooms and rope type plugs, but for motorcycle tires, I treat rope plugs as temporary and mushrooms as permanent solutions.

It's a trick. You'll fix it, and your brother will want to ride it again. What are little brothers for anyway? We've seen this before.

Adjust the tps sensor.... common complaint.

I bought a set of security torx bits just for this. It was the first non maintenance item I ever learned to do on a motorcycle.

This is a great bike to learn maintenance on. It is easy and cheap. There is no lower fairing I am assuming, so doing oil changes takes like 10 minutes.

This bike is good on tires.
It can be used as a cheap track bike... I was passing 600's on my SV650 and ear to ear while riding it.

He asked me if I want it for the following reasons
-He is too lazy to fix whats broken
-He is too lazy to sell it on kijiji
-He doesn't want to ride it
-He will let it rot in my garage
So GTAM, what would you do? Fix it to keep or sell? or sell it as is.

I would fabricate some kind of cock n bull story to dedicate a main forum thread to unloading the turd. Have people jamming my inbox with lowballs.

-the first gear is acting weird, it bucks crazy but only in first gear, it doesn't slip it just bucks. It grabs, lets go, then grabs again.
Are you sure that's just how the bike acts at low speed? Or is this happening higher in the Rev range?

I know my buddy's HP4 is practically lugging the engine at low speeds so it gives the feeling of bucking.

If he does this, he needs to safety the bike. I don't think you can safety with a plugged tire.

To the OP: do you have any idea what the insurance hit will be on a litre bike at your age? You are talking nickels and dimes to fix the bike compared to what insurance would be.

As CafeRay said, if you put it in your name, you will need a safety. In this case I don't think that's a bad thing, because it sounds like you're a little uncertain of some of the problems and their possible solutions. If it was just the mirror and lights, I would say don't sweat it, but the brake issue and the rear tire are not just cosmetic. Have you thought about selling both the bikes and getting something like a new 300?

I had a plug put in the DL650 rear tire. Asked the Mechanic / shop owner about safety check with a plug. He said it is perfectly legal. He even refused one kid with 3 plugs but the guy called MTO and they said as long as it doesn't leak air pass it. He made him sign a your own stupidity waiver.

I've ridden long times on plugged tires, but only when I was a broke *** student.

Doing the valves, synching the carbs, PAIR valve elimination. All of this is easy on this bike.

If you are not paying your brother for the bike, it is a no brainer. Everything listed should not be super expensive, especially considering you are getting a bike out of it. The SV is a solid bike. If you like riding the bike and can afford the insurance, I would say take it.

I just patched my tire. Nothing wrong with that

Take it, fix it, sell it in the spring when prices are up a bit, and buy what you want.

I like the ninja 300 and I really really like the RC390

True, When I mentioned to him that people are interested in it his face looked like he wanted to keep it lol. Either way meh.

He said he adjusted it before he dumped it with no success. Apparently this was a problem before he dumped it. And it is happening through the entire rev range and only in first gear.

Very constructive, thank you.

Insurance will be 1700. Not ridiculous, but high, (I paid 1800 for my first season on my 125, now paying 800 and it will probably be 650 or less next renew)
