Does anyone know the frequency of crashes there?

From the number of videos of wrecked bikes, cars, bicycles and skateboards it looks like an insurer's hell. How long does rnickey mouse have to wait for another photo op?

The bikers all congregate at that corner, kind of like Timmie's here. It's got a downward camber / road crown with a slight bump when you're at maximum lean. Add a bit of sand and you have Mickey Mouse making a career out of people's pain. It's weird, rather than the police / insurance investigating what they can do asphalt-wise to make that corner safer (and save millions on claims), they just let it happen. That's life in the USA.

I have not seen one shooting there.
 
I think given the sheer volume of traffic through there, at pace, and always on camera, the crash rate isn't really all that high. There's a total 105 crashes in his crash playlist, the first of which was uploaded 7+ years ago. That's 1.25/month for those keeping score.

I also suspect he doesn't really set out to catch crashes; sure it's good for the YT channel, but his business started as, and still is, high quality photo's of riders in action.

this, though not a scientific review, common sense prevails. This same logic would be with the dragon. there are a number of crashes, but proportionally, perhaps it is statistically not terribly concerning.

You do also have to consider that the riders know that the cameras are rolling at that corner, so how much does one push themselves to a limit and beyond for the photo op to get a great "action shot" or to satisfy their own ego? If a rider is pushing limits on a public road (careless/dangerous driving perhaps) is a resulting crash the fault of the road surface or the rider? If the road surface was improved, would there be a lower crash rate or would the upset limit that a rider pushes to just be moved up?

As someone who used to ride that corner/road fairly often, I can tell you it is a feature of that area, they don't change it because it brings in tourism money and because they are proud of it.

Also, California does not have the corrupt insurance problems of Ontario - minor crashes do not generate "millions in claims". People don't crash there as often as rnickeymouse's channel would have you believe...for the most part it is just people responsibly enjoying the road.
 
Just goes to show how social media throws perception out of whack. No wait it throws the perception of reality out of whack. Anyway, I should have thought that guardrail could have been re-engineered into a better mouse trap.. er.. catch fence.
 
If you lay down on the road by the end of the turn and eyeball the grade of the road, you'll see a dip in it. If you can picture the slow motion shots we get in MotoGP, you can picture the suspension unloading for a microsecond and the tire patches losing grip. This is that corner.

I think a lot of them are skilled riders trying to beat the corner for bragging rights. Kind of like putting a sign on your fridge saying "whatever you do, don't open the fridge!" Everyone opens the fridge.

The rest are poor suckers that happen upon the corner and get taken out by it. I would imagine some are taken out by target fixation on Mickey Mouse and the rest of the bikers that sit there.

Nobody "happens upon" that corner - that part of Mulholland is not really "on the way" to anywhere...people who are riding it are riding it on purpose.

Sorry if my actually living there and riding that road is spoiling your perception of what's going on...but that's just not how it is.
 
It's a cocktail of doosh, main ingredients being peer pressure and momentary loss of mechanical grip. The keyboard with teeth missing under guardrail puts the cherry on top. Good viewing pleasure via video link but hardly worth the ride out imho. I'd rather watch a lady in Alabama push her car into the pond with kids inside (inside car, not pond but technically in pond I guess) to impress potential hypergamy victim. The land of the free.

If I were visiting the state I could easily "happen upon" that corner. Trust me, riding roads that don't go anywhere are a personal delight. I could be one of many.

Two very different context there.. If would argue, if you're intentionally setting out to ride the snake, you should know damn well what you're getting into. Happening upon the most notorious of corners on YT? after intentionally setting out to ride said corner?

You come off, your fault, not the corner's.
 
I've hung out at that corner three times, a few hours at a time each visit. Never saw a crash. Based on that evidence, it's all a conspiracy.

There are some pretty fast riders there though.
