You mean Captain Downer And The Buzzkills--there's never just one!

Poser is OLD though, like 18th Century France old at least. "Poseur" is the original term--someone who pretends, referring to non-aristocratic social climbers who married into wealthy families or purchased their titles/positions. Posing as the nobility, essentially--the nouveau riche.

Writers/artists/actors (who often had aristocratic patrons if they were successful) later adopted the term to denigrate professional rivals or those who dabbled in their discipline--the dilettante.

Repeated misspellings and mispronunciations by English speakers slowly changes the word to "poser". It becomes adopted by just about every sort of enthusiast (surfers, skaters, riders) to insult those who want the social benefits of belonging to a certain group without the effort.

This is why a person who buys a Ducati Panigale and wobbles it over to Tim Hortons, hoping to impress strangers with stories, is called a poser today.

Or something like that.
