Motor Oil

The next best filter to Amosil ;) Where do you get them? Before the EA line of Amsoil filters came along and PureOne was top notch I search far and wide for PL14610 but could never source any for any reasonable price. If I bought a case of 24 I could get em cheap, but never found anyone that already had em in Canada.

good point. I get them out of the US. Think I had to order 6 last time to get that price.

I'm an amsoil preferred customer.

I used to be as well. Then I started working as a lubrication formulator and had schooling in tribology.

Amsoil is good. So is Castrol, Pennzoil, Mobil1, Shell, Royal Purple, and just about every other large companies oil. Semi synthetics give you all the price of a full synthetic with much of the same properties as the cheap dino oil.

Amsoil has been made at Exxon, Shell, or whomever the lowest contracted bidder happens to be. It's according to their spec needs but they have no refinery of their own.

Amsoil is fine but they ride on the coat tails of the large manufacturers and marketing that tries to convince everyone that their product is the best. If it's cheaper than the others then it's the best. If it's not, then it isn't the best.

As for the filters Wix makes the canister and Donaldson makes the media inside.

I wouldn't classify all those oil as the same. There are different class of synthetics. Not too long ago & i think they still do, castrol synthec was being sold as a true synthetic, which is far from the truth. They are just refined group 3 oil. Group 4 is true synthetic (if memory serves me right).

Mobil 1 being sold in N America is also not a true synthetic. I think it is manufactured from a group 3 base. The classification for synthetics is a bit lose in N America, but in Europe it is more tight. Castrol synthec & mobil 1 manufactured in Germany are "true" synthetics. These include castrol 0w-30 & mobil 1 0w-40. Since we're on that note, Rotella t6 is not a true synthetic. Amsoil & Royal P are true synthetics.

In my conclusion Not all oils are equal

Never really seen an issue with any kind of engine or motor when the owner/operator changes the stuff frequent enough. It's those that "forget" or "gas and go" or try and stretch things too far.

Motorcycle engines that have multi functions for oil such as cooling and clutch use, I'd try and use a good oil, don't mix it with anything and make the time to change it at least by the manufacturer's recommendations.

There are properties/additives to oil for motorcycle engines that are not the same for automobile engines.
