Michigan Bike Tour

I've toured many of the states close to Ontario and scouted Michigan as a potential state, but looking at google maps its pretty well a copy of Ontario with a lot of generally flat terrain and the straight roads that result from this.

I just returned from PA where I met a rider from Michigan who concurs with my observation except (as you point out) riding is good in the northern part of the state. He suggested areas around Traverse city. Its 10 pm as I write this and my GPS says that if I leave right now, I should arrive there at 9 am. I love good riding roads but the trouble is I'm not willing to slab-it for 11 hours and take a chance on a few hundred km of twisties.

Rechecking earlier observations I had on google maps confirms Michigan is generally a copy of Ontario with the exception of cheap booze in the U.S. Lucky you live near Sault Ste Marie.

We did the Tunnel of Trees this summer. It's nice and curvy, but it's a 1-1/2 lane road with houses and cottages all along it and the cages coming the other way go way to fast for the curves and take up the whole road. The lower part of the Lower Peninsula was a waste of time. Loved the Upper Peninsula.

The Wife & I spent a week doing a clockwise loop of lake Huron with about 4 days spent in the upper penninsula checking out ghost towns. There are some spectacular roads if you get near the Superior shore. The 41/26 loop around Copper Harbour - Eagle River is awesome. The 41 section being very much a "tunnel of trees". Also 77 up to Grand Marais is a fab road.

Like most of the states we've ridden, the roads are always in great shape. Even roads in the middle of no where.

But I agree Pennsylvania has many great roads. 126? 129? up to Shamokin was amazing.
