Manufacturer's Mileage For My Bike ...Compared To Real-Life Measurement

Bikes are pretty sensitive to wind/air resistance too, as they are not very aerodynamic. The open shape of a motorcycle, with added rider, is more of a sail than anything else and only gets worse as speed increases.

Headwinds and tailwinds can have noticeable effects on both speed and fuel economy as well.

I have an instant fuel use gauge on the ZX14 and it is really surprising how much better the bike is on fuel fully tucked rather than riding in normal riding position. Goes from 6.5l/100km to about 5.8 or so when you duck behind the screen at highway speeds.

Sausage....

1. MPG ratings apply to brand new bikes, not old ones. Bikes lose MPG and HP over time. Same as anything really with an engine.

2. The testing is not regulated like in the automotive industry so you are looking at numbers that are as accurate as what the manufacturers think they can get away with claiming.

3. MPG is worked from EPA testing ratings. AKA: Done on a dyno. Dyno testing doesn't take into account drag, rider weight, shift point, RPM or anything real world. There is no wind on a dyno. Obviously, even you can see that doing 100 KPH would have more resistance from wind than doing 50KPH. Motorcycles aren't very aerodynamic. A few are better than others but some are brick walls.

4. Unless you ran the bike at the optimal speed without going up or down hill (changing load) and stopping for traffic lights or intersections your data isn't accurate. Only close. You had one "test" with some city and another with 10% city. Very scientific.

Now, seriously, why does it matter?

If you want MPG buy a scooter.

Or, just enjoy your bike.

I already know what's the range of my reserve using YOUR OWN advice, to extrapolate kilometers and multiply x's litres  My reserve can go 77km before running dry.

Do you remember this advice?

Everything is stock, the bike is 2003. I'm not complaining about fuel consumption, I don't mind $26 dollars for hours of fun on my bike, I'm just bothered that manufacturer's should use real-world conditions to calculate the mileage of a bike, not controlled environments so they can LIE about it in magazines.

These things are taken into account by Kawasaki at the time of the test no?

All these responses you reply to and the only two that nailed the discrepancy, you ignore?! Post 5 and 20 nailed it. Since I have determined you to be a bit of a stickler for details, Pegassus, for the record, you got 54.92 mpg Imp gallon.
The math...Imp gal = 4.54609 litres
1.6093 km = 1 mile.

No wonder 90% of the replies I got on my dogs in cars post were disconnected with my actual post. Although I admit, in that thread the majority either couldn't read, or read two lines and assumed what it was about. And got it wrong. If people would just slow down and actually read what others post, they could a) offer a more valid, pertinent opinion, and b) help a person like Peg, figure where he went wrong with his calcs. But even when two posters nail the answer, they still flew like a jet overhead.

So I digress...I'm bored here again..mean-spirited, arrogant, flippant, vacuous replies run rampant. Is it worth maneuvering through all the utter crap to occasionally get to the good stuff? Jury's out, IMO...maybe on the next rainy day...maybe..

I think if you read back and look at the behaviour and quality of Pegassus' threads/posts you'll find that it's really easy for people to fly off the handle a bit when it comes to him (myself included) . I particularly like this thread http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforu...-It-Take-You-To-Learn-How-To-Ride-A-Motorycle, and the fact he's got 2000+ posts but just got a motorcycle and still seems to think it all. I'm not saying Pegassus is all bad, but he needs to check the attitude and ego at the door. I think oomis sums it best with this:
Wow I'll check them out, I'm 40 with a G licence since 1989.....
You're 40 *&^%ing years old? Are you kidding me? I would have pegged you at 25, tops. There's no excuse for a 40 year old man posting the crap that you do.

^ oh I hear you. Peg puts his foot in it often. Here in this thread too for that matter. I had figured a troll, but every once in awhile he says something a typical troll simply wouldn't say...so I pretty much figure he is just a really misunderstood individual some of the time. I am too at times, but the one thing I credit him with, is he takes a lot of knocks (some deserved, others not so much) but I've never really seen him retaliate with any level of mean-spiritedness. Not like some here. Myself included probably.. when my patience runs thin at times.
