Make Sure You Have CAA

I am a Premier member of CAA and today it payed.
I was returning from a few days riding in Pennsylvania when about 11:45 am at the 10 mile mark on 400 in New York State - my bike just died and would not start. I was able to park under the Rice road overpass.

So, I went through the motions and called AAA and a Flat bed picked up the bike and drove me to the border where we were to meet a CAA truck which would take me the rest of the way to Markham. From Rice Road on the 400 to Markham is 130 miles (208 kms)

It took almost all day, (waiting for the trucks plus Traffic on QEW and 401) but I am home safely and I only had to pay $6.00 at the Peace Bridge tool Booth.

I have no idea what the story would have been had I not been a premier member of CAA. Think about it. If you are not yet a full member and if you like to travel distances...

I'm riding that same route home tomorrow and I made sure my CAA coverage was up to date.

i got a notice in the mail stating my dues are late. the last one said I had a final notice pro rated at $100 if i signed up in 15 days.

I think i'm going to see if they pro rate it again.
 
I thought you had to pay AAA then send CAA the bill?

This is the reason why I opted for CAA this year (year I got my bike). Also figured it might come in handy with the car as well, since I can request a flatbed instead of a typical towtruck.
 
You can also request MotoLimo, they have specialized equipment for bikes :)
 
Had to get CAA to break into my car for me on the 1800km drive home...not my finest hour.
 
I had to use CAA Premier twice last year on my cross border journey. It was the best money I could have spent in preparation for that trip.

Bah.... CAA can go fly a kite.

Used to be with them, but we have a fleet of vehicles and I have a lot of friends that have car troubles. I gobbled up my 4 "privileges" in no time, so they wanted me to "add a family member" and pay more. Screw them.

Switched to AMA (US based), and now I get UNLIMITED service across US and Canada and even Puerto Rico haha.

Cheaper than CAA too, and they do my cars, vans and bike (they even include RV's and trailers!)

There was a thread on here about AMA, but I believe it got purged. Too bad.

CAA is a form of insurance. If you have reliable vehicles you don't need it that much. I've spent over a grand on CAA type memberships and never really needed them. If I had the money in my pocket would a grand pay for a trailer or van rental? The best insurance is a friend with a trailer.

or a pick-up truck with ramps;)
 
Never had to use a service like CAA, but I do have BMW road side assistance, it is nice piece of mind when a long ways from home and you know you are covered. Thankfully its part of buying a BMW, you get 3 years of it for free I believe.

I forgot to include this little tidbit. I figured if I said that all it cost me was $6.00 for the bridge toll, then it would be clear. TOTAL COVERAGE is TOTAL.

I remember some tripe about paying AAA first in last summer's postings.

Not only did I not have to pay the AAA, but the fellow in the flat bed waited with me at the US side of the border until the CAA truck arrived. A little over an hour because the truck was from Welland but he had to go to St. Catherine's to pick up the trailer.

The driver from the CAA truck dismounted the bike from the AAA flat bed and placed it in his trailer. (CAA policy is to carry bikes in enclosed trailers - not flat beds!)

I thanked and said good bye to the AAA guy and didn't have to sign anything. CAA takes care of everythng. In Markham, I signed a release sheet that showed the mileage and that everything was ok.

Now, there may be some who know someone who knows someone who heard that... No one knows anything unless they Pay for Premium membership in CAA and need to be towed from South Wales N.Y to Markham... with total coverage except you have to pay to cross the bridge! $6.00!

End of discussion and thank you for your interest. Now go buy a policy at CAA. (Or anywhere else they provide TOTAL coverage)
 
Too lazy to look it up, anyone know the difference between Gold and Premier membership?

Have had to use CAA few times for myself, and a few times for my buddies. They take a while, but it's soooo much cheaper than paying a tow truck driver direct. A buddy had to tow his bike a couple km's and it ran him over $100, would have paid for a CAA membership through that one tow.
 
Like most insurance, its best if you never have to use it - but on the couple of times I've needed it, its been invaluable. All the preventative maintenance in the world isn't going to stop you from getting a flat on the road - and I've had flats on literally brand new tires (one I had put on just the day before) twice so far.

For me because I usually tour solo, just having a number I can call if something happens is worth the premium I pay. I don't have any friends with trailers who are going to come haul my butt out of a desert in Arizona or a mountain in West Virginia - so I'm happy to known somebody will, even if its for a price.

And if I don't need it, well all the better.

If you think the bike makes it worth while to have, try having the Jeep! IF I break when I'm on my 4-wheelnig trips, they get me home. I've called 3 times in the last three years and they're always helpful.
