Hi,

I have my gear except for proper pants. As you can see from this pic jeans do NOT work well in the rain...

However, my textile jacket held up well during this ride and kept me dry and warm. I could go with either a demin type of options with kevlar and armour or something textile.

Two I am looking at right now are Klim Traverse pants and Joe Rocket Alter Ego. Any thoughts of these or other pants? I tend to do warm weather riding and the occasional communte.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

At this point I want to get something with some armour, venting, and abilitty to keep me from getting road rash. Not so worried about rain wear. I usually avoid riding in the rain whenever possible.

The JRs are nice. Work great in the cold cause they come with the liner. If It gets warmer pull out the liner and unzip a 4" band that goes from thigh around the butt to other thigh.
Rain proof, wind proof, vent well in the heat and they have some armor.

Does anyone wear the padded shorts under with the hip armour or the Icon Stryker knee/shin pads under their pants? Or is this way overkill?

I don't think it's overkill at all. It's your body on the line, not others'.

Look at the True North, Phoenix and Alter Ego.

They're good for hot weather as well as removable inner liner for rain/cold.

Ive had these for about 5 years now and they're still good http://www.joerocket.com/catalog/index.cfm/237/130/Pants/Alter_Ego_Pant
Above ones are really good for hot weather, and they have a zipper in the back so that you're not constantly tucking in your shirt ;)

+1. JR Alter Ego all the way.

I'm pretty much ATGATT, and I typically wear my Alter Ego textile pants with a pair of Dainese knee guards as the built-in armour sat at my shins, and didn't seem like it would do much in a crash. I also wear regular jeans underneath, but that's more so I can remove the pants & guards when I'm not riding, but it also might work as another layer of protection.

So, I went to Royal Distributing after working nights and got there when they opened. Picked up my new shield for my Icon Alliance helmet and went checking out the pants. The Klim Traverse seem a little heavy at first glance for summer riding. The Joe Rocket Alter Ego seem quite nice and the only think I can see is that the knee armour is lacking. Easily rectified with the Icon Stryker knee Armour and perhaps some kind of padded short like the Icon Stryker Shorts to shore up these areas of protection. There doesn't seem to be a ton of pockets on the Alter Ego pants but there are a few on my Bull Faster textile jacket so between the two I should have enough storage for the rides I take. Best of all I have one of those 8" long zippers at the bottom of my jacket which should work with the one on the Joe Rocket Alter Ego pants.

My one question is how the Alter Ego pants differ from the True North pants. From a glance the True North pants seem a little thicker and seem to have more pockets. Hmmm... I think I am going to have to go back and actually start trying some of these on. From what I see though my first choice going in is going to be the Joe Rocket Alter Ego unless the Klim Traverse or Joe Rocket True North blow me away somehow.

Joe rocket= speed and strength = true north

Meaning they are different versions of the SAME compnay

I have both the true north and the alter ego pants. The true north do not have venting as the alter ego does (you remove a panel and it leaves straight mesh). I bought the true north in XL to fit over jeans then picked up the true north in large as it fit better for me (34 waist regular length). The true north I rode in on my first commute under constant rain and low temps (below 10C) for 1hr and was comfortable the entire way.

If you're interested in the true north I am willing to sell mine (5 days of use in Nov 2012) for a great price.

I wear AGV Telluride pants in all but hot weather, only because I got them too late last season. On a bike with zero wind protection I've worn them comfortably into the negatives, and that's a lot of highway riding as I commute Guelph->Mississauga with them. They are waterproof from my experience, but looking at the zippers for venting, I'm going to guess they'll be quite warm in the summer. These are NOT an overpant, unless you're an anorexic emo kid, they fit quite tight. I do like them though.

++1 In cold weather I wear long johns under them. In summer I can wear shorts under them and when I get where I'm going, I rip the pants off and stuff 'em in my tail box. 3-season goodness.
