Looking for a new bike

I have a '96 ninja ex500. I'm looking spending around $3k but not sure where I should be heading. Close to being able to buy a new 300. I'd downgrade to a 250 or 300 as I don't care much about speed and I'd rather have ABS and newer technology in the bike. Just wondering what you guys would suggest.
Get a used 250 for 2.5k or is it worth spending 4-5k on a new bike. I'd mostly use it for commuting and would be doing a lot of highway riding

Get a used 250,ride the Crap out of it then go bigger.

I've been riding for a couple years now and size/displacement is not an issue for me. Not to mention a 600cc bike is still over $5000 a year on insurance. Which is just not affordable. I guess I'm just wondering if buying new is worth the couple extra brand. I see that bikes dont depreciate anywhere near the same as cars either

Buy used. A $3000 bike with 10k on it is new. Be patient, find the right deal. My 2 cents.

I would look for another EX500 in best condition.

If you are doing a lot of hwy driving, I would suggest a 500cc bike, maybe a Honda, buy used and save a few $$$

I bought a brand new cb300f for commuting. Commute is roughly 30 miles, of various speeds. 55 is the highest. It easy does 60. I'm new to riding and is great for what I need. Total out the door was $4000. Fun bike.

If you're on an older 500cc bike and just looking for newer technology, why not look at a modern 500cc? The Honda CB500's have been out for a year or two and you should be able to find one used. The CB's have liquid cooled engines, fuel injection and available ABS breaks. That motor is going to be bullet proof and last forever and Honda makes three different models to suit your taste, the "R", the "F", and the "X". Insurance should be comparable to what you're currently riding.
