Lane splitting/filtering legal in NSW(Down Under)

Canada is Waaaaaaay behind the rest of the world with Traffic laws. the only way things would change is if it generates revenue; it's not about safety here.
not gonna see anything like this for at least 50 to 75 years here. sad.

but truly makes sense. is safer, allows traffic flow, reduces road rage and allows competent riders to get around the less competent license holders.

It would generate revenue. Bypassing traffic jams would draw more people to bikes and scooters and they would all need licences, testing and annual plate renewal. The vast majority of the new riders would also own a car for the winters so overall vehicle ownership would increase.

Safer for us, more cash for them.... win win!

Sounds like a pretty good idea. Provided they have Full M and Driver Training, filtering would be acceptable.

I think filtering should be legal. I'm sure there has been a discussion about standing of this issue in Ontario, anyone know of a good thread that discussed this issue in the past so I can read it? Has there been a strong push that calls for reconsideration of laws surrounding this subject?

Anything that encourages people to drive scooters and bikes makes money by saving the City on having to replace and expand the infrastructure.

Bikes take less room and provide less wear, than cars.

I'm probably one of the few who isn't a huge fan of filtering/lane splitting, at least with the current licensing. It's far too easy to get a license which means way to many idiots are driving around putting make up on, not using mirrors/signals etc. If it were harder to get a license and part of training mentioned that motorcycles will be going in between lanes (both stationary and moving traffic) I'd be happier with it. However just seeing people getting out of cars without even looking for oncoming traffic (cars parked on the side of roadways) and cyclists who do filter at lights almost doing summer-salts over people getting out of cars at stop lights without looking really worries me...

I questioned the legality of lane splitting in Ontario to Wheels (Toronto Star), in the hopes of getting a response from the MTO. Ultimately it turned out to be a bit of a grey answer, where the elephant in the room is definitely preaching, "don't do it". Read it for yourself: http://www.wheels.ca/feature/why-lane-splitting-in-a-motorcycle-is-just-asking-for-trouble/

It looks like the MTO have added, 'Lane Splitting' to their handbook. I gave my manual away, so I can't confirm if it's always been there or if it's been recently added.

I'll be interesting to see 'Lane Splitting' questions on the M1 written test. I wonder if they're already there?

Half the people on bikes in the GTA shouldn't be on the road period, and you want to let them lane split now too?

I find that my insurance premiums are quite high enough already, thank you very much!

Fully agree with all of this. They should maybe worry about improving driving instruction and how one obtains a license before letting people lane split

Revenue is the driving force, no doubt about it. Off topic, but check out the "stop100" campaign. Despite the facts, Ontario's Minister of Transport simply brushes the idea of increased speed limits a side. No study, no open discussion, just no. There is a reason most everyone drives at 120. It's because they feel safe and comfortable doing it. There is a reason the limit is still 100. It's because there are an awful lot of 15-20 over tickets being handed out.

I dont see filtering being a huge problem provided it is not abused. California's rules allow lane splitting as long as it's done safely.

A good set of guidelines goes a long way.

People from California say the exact same thing about their drivers, yet bikes split there legally and for the most part safely. Was there a few weeks ago, what a beautiful thing.

Aussies in general think that they live in a super nanny state :) and pretty much everyone says how ****** the drivers are when they show up to work. It's all the same everywhere man. From my limited observation, people in general are much more relaxed on the road here than the GTA 100KM radius. I'll let you guys know how splitting goes once I get my bike here.
