KTM RC390 Leaked to world...from Canada!

Looks awesome. Much better tail than the rc8. I think it would be a riot daily commuter. Depends on pricing as said though. 9k = 600 ss money and then it wouldn't be worth it. If this is a competitor to the cbr 500 hopefully it's priced in a similar fashion.

It's a shame about insurance and licensing restrictions playing into motorcycle design. That KTM (with slightly friendlier ergos)) looks like a hoot but I'd rather see the same HP out of a lazier 500-700cc single. It would cost the same to build and not weigh much more. I'm pretty sure my motarded DR650 could give the 390 a decent run.

how much is a cbr 500r new?

If this is priced around the 5k region, then I might just pull the trigger. I am willing to bet it's not though :(

On a serious note :p ,

Did ktm finally realize rocker rollers need lubrication?

I changed my rocker rollers in my LC4 more often than I change my CBR's oil.

CBR500r is $6300, + delivery. This bike is far quicker than a CBR500R. KTMs have typically better finish quality. So, they will need to price it somewhere above the Ninja 300 ($5800) or the Honda.

My guess would be more than the CBR, around $6500, but that's a guess. We should know after next week when the bike is officially introduced.

That's been going on for decades, it's what killed the turbo bikes.

Don't get hung up on the displacement, the late 70s CB750As made the same 47hp, weighed 580lbs.

They are entry level rides. The current market share is not static. The manufacturers are hoping to grow the market share (see Honda Grom), not just steal a piece of the current pie, ie get more people riding. Entry level rides have lower insurance now, fact.
More riders means more insurance customers. There isn't a limited amount of insurance available, so increased insurance demand will not necessarily lead to higher prices (partly because a larger insurance pool will diversify the risk). From the insurers perspective, 2 people paying $700 a year on their 'safer' 250s (what I paid at the start) is better than 1 person on a 600+ paying 1400 (what I pay now, and I have one write off in my bag too). Basically, all else equal, more is better for insurance. For now, insurance price and lack of accessibility keeps people out at the margins. Expanding the margins brings more people and theoretically better insurance. But who knows, maybe insurers won't see it that way...

The insurance industry employs the best actuarial scientists out of Universities, these are insanely smart people, and if there is a nickel to be made, that's how they will proceed.

Soooooo we going to play guess the MSRP again like we did with the ninja 300? I think TAFB won a Tims card that time around.

Im guessing MSRP is 6899 in Canada. I can't see this thing going for less than the kawi or honda.

And thanks for the replies CafeRay and eljay.

47hp? That's exactly 20hp down from my 1975 CB750. Back to reality, I'm not so much hung up on hole size as I am listening to little motor beating it's heart out on the hiway. 390 would be great if riding Yorkshire Dales country lanes. We have big open spaces in Ontario and beyond. Pity.

Well I just got a formal quote back on the 1290 Duke R and thats at $22,000+ tax and PDI. Ya fack that way to go KTM build a fantastic do it all bike and charge more then most people can afford. For 22g's you can by slightly used SS, Naked, Supermoto and have money left over for the insurance on all three bikes.

That being said i'd peg this one around $8999.95 + tax and PDI.

Yah, and next year they'll have an updated version and the year after that another update and then you might need the little electric motor that drives the throttle plate but it'll be backordered to October because a cable wasn't good enough. Or a variation of that.

You people are off your rockers. No one is going to spend almost 10 gs on a 44 hp bike.

What the eff?? 22k + tax and PDI!? I think i'd rather get something like an Aprilia RSV4 APRC ABS SBK for that!

9k for a 400cc will just be silly.

$7899 is my guess. People will buy it more for looks and design, than overall HP, and if there's a savings in insurance for having a less than 400cc bike, then it'll be a winner.

If it's the same price on insurance as a 600cc SS, then it'll just sit there and we can hope for a fire sale! :D

Dealers here can be pretty greedy. Look at the cb1100. Almost 50% more expensive here.

Guesses: 1) Slightly more expensive that the DRZ400SM, about $8k.

2) Assembled in India, so more problems than expected. Lots of warranty issues.

3) Thumper motor will be highway capable in theory. Numbing vibrations in practice.

4) Insurance will be reasonable (for a premium), until the squids start binning them. Then it
joins the sportbike surcharge/blacklist.

That's the point I was making. They will price it way to high and it will be a flop.

Yup.

I actually like the looks but then I started looking at the specs compared to the 25 year old FZR400 I use to ride/race and became sad :(

FZR400 vs RC390
I4 vs thumper
399cc vs 373cc
59hp vs 43hp
157kg vs 147kg

So stock the FZR was heavier by 10kg but also made 16 more hp....In a quarter of a century I would have expected more improvement.

If they price it 2x or more the price that it is sold for in other countries we could easily do a group buy of a shipping container full of brand new grey market bikes if we wanted to. Why not? Everyone in the chain is happy because they made money, even KTM.
