I'm getting myself a knee guard and would like to know

if it was possible to get this one in Canada.

I even checked ebay and they had none.

Shift Racing 2010 Model
Enforcer Knee/Shin Guards

This one has really good reviews, but shipping cost is just too expensive from Motorcycle Superstore.

Other alternative would be

Thor Motocross 2010 Model
Sector Knee Guards

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/6/10/1990/ITEM/Thor-Motocross-Sector-Knee-Guards.aspx

which doesn't look that bad.

What do you guys say?

Do you guys have any suggestions on knee guards for under $25?

Or should I go for

Thor Motocross 2010 Model
Force Kneeguards

I don't mind spending some more on it,

some of the more expensive ones have such a bad reviews like the icon one.

By the way, I ride street bike if that matters...

You can try machine racing.
They are an off-road only shop. Was the only place I could get shift gear in the GTA back in the day.

Those pads are crazy cheap. You cant even get a shift t shirt for $12.

http://www.machineracing.com - their contact info.

Give them a call and im sure they can get you a price. They have always been a great shop to deal with IMO.

I have the Thor knee guards. They are actually a knee brace. They are hinged at the knee in such a way that they will prevent your knees from being forced sideways. I would not consider them practical for road use. Offroad knee guards are bulky and require something bulky like MX pants to go over top of them. Most road pants already come with knee armour sewn in and are designed to protect you from a minor impact as well as rash.

If you are hung up on offroad armour, Royal Distributing has a good selection.

Isn't the knee guard/brace what it's suppose to be?

Bulky and protecting your knee from being forced sideways.

Why would you not consider them practical for road use?

Because it is too bulky?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

I want some good protections that will actually protect my knees and not slid down my knees

yea, but at what point in the scale of "protection" do you go and say "okay, now this is just impractical for everyday riding" even though yes, it would give u the most protection.

some people draw that line at a t-shirt and shorts, others say a leather jacket and jeans, yet others say anything less than a racing suit is suicide...

i wear the icon knee/shin guards and boots under jeans for regular riding, yes, not the most protection, but anything more and IMO it becomes too bulky and cumbersome.

knee and shin gaurds like these are mostly for trail riding in the forest with branches and rocks hitting your legs. The reason the motox guys wear the knee braces is cause of the way they do corners and knee twisting is pretty common. I don't know if these knee pads braces would even fit under jeans or in your leather suit.

You might not necessarily need a knee brace unless you have a pre-existing injury that requires that your knee not move in a certian direction. I think mostly, for street riding, these protectors stop friction and contact injuries from road surfaces. I'm looking for protectors I can use underneath reinforced riding pants so I need low profile, comfortable ones.

I'm also looking for a knee protection that I can wear under or over my jeans.

It doesn't matter if it's bulky or not,

cause I'm gonna take them out when I'm not on my bike.

careful though, some of those protectors look too bulky to get jeans over ...unless you're a gangster and your jeans hang halfway off your *** anyway.

Knee braces help prevent injury in the same way boots with good ankle support help prevent ankle injury.

We can monopolise a few threads :)

What you say is true but when you have an crash that involves flexing of mobile components (limbs) the energy is transferred across all the flexing points. An ankle brace might stop a break at the ankle but if there's enough energy in the contact (crash) then that energy has to go somewhere, if it is prevented at the ankle due to the brace then it might occur at the knee, breaking the knee. If it's prevented at both then again, if the contact is strong enough you might well break the femur.

I think a lot of impacts generally don't have the energy to go beyond the ankle but some do hence all the knee problems with skiing accidents. I think it's a bad idea to wear a knee brace unless you need to imobilise your knee for a pre-exisitng injury (or because of the nature of a particular activity). Ankles yes...because of the previous comment. But I also had an injury when I was wearing an ankle brace that prevented side to side movement....the energy of the contact didn't break my knee but it did break the ankle worse than expected because my ankle couldn't flex at all, I ended up breaking my ankle in three places as opposed to one clean break.

Knee braces are better suited for off road riding.

No amount of equipment is going to prevent all injuries in all situations that's for sure.

I personally don't wear a knee brace, I haven't had a knee issue....yet.

I don't have any pre-existing injuries on my ankles nor knees.

So the best way to protect myself is

a good motorcycle boots with a knee/shin guard, not those knee braces?

When you hit the asphalt after bailing off your road bike you want abrasion protection, in the form of leather. Good leather pants or a 1 piece suit already have armour built into the typical contact points so additional knee guards are not needed. Generally a pair of knee braces are too bulky to fit under a leather suit or leather pants, I know they wont fit under my leathers.

My knee was put back together with wire and the only time I wear knee braces is while on my dirt bike. For the road I wear leather with built in armour.

Check out the Knox Cross Guard knee protectors. They have 3 velcro straps that will prevent them from sliding down your knees, are comfortable, and can easily fit under jeans.

There is a good youtube video on the knox knee guard, and a lot of videos on other armours as well. The guy explains where the safety features are and how to use them. He always starts out with super loud deep voice when he introduces himself. Not sure if the videos are bias towards knox brand though.

There are some good knee guards out there, but not many available locally.

Personally, I like to try on stuff before I buy, to ensure that I'll keep wearing it.

I've been wearing stuff designed for downhill mountain bike racing, and as far as I can tell they're JUST as tough on the outside, way more comfortable and they don't slip of fall down like motorcycle one's do. This is probably cuz they were designed to be worn while pedalling, and have been in development for YEARS, whereas the motorcycle street stuff has only been made popular in the last 5 years, if that.

What name brands can you recommend? I'm looking for a hard outer shell with some padding, but able to fit under overpants.

I dont see whats wrong the icon field armor knee/shin guards.

I wear them under pants no problem. Everyone whom I've showed them to didnt know I was wearing them prior. They fit snug nicely into a motorcycle boot, which helps keep it in place from sliding down your knee incase of sliding on pavement. The velcro also helps keep it in place. If you have fat legs, stay away, but other than that.... they're the best bang for the buck IMO.
