Kijijij bike ads with reason for selling due to high insurance lol

A few things: Mean is the sum of all values divided by the number sampled. Median is the value at which 50% of the population is both above and below the value. I think IQ is done on the assumption that it's normally distributed and centered at 100, with the bounds at 0 and 200. Hopefully by writing this, I show that I'm towards the better end (above-median) of the IQ histogram ;)

So just for fun and using 100 as the mean. If 80 % of the population were to fall between 90-110 evenly distributed, would you say people between 90-100% were below average? I've never taken a statistics course but i'm pretty sure the average, and an average sample are two different things. So 80% of the population would be considered average, and the rest outside of that range would be above or below.

Someone please answer this. Hearing people whine about how insurance is high for children on 11 second race bikes is clearly a less productive use of time :P

I don't think so.

Wanna recheck that before telling someone else they're wrong?

Take 5 values - 1, 1, 2, 3, 10
Average = 3.4 (with 4 out of 5 values below it)
Median = 2 (Equal number of values below as above)

While it's possible that the median and average could be the same, most of the time they're not. onecartel's right.

I just did a quick search... here's the theory on how IQ is distributed: http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/iqbasics.aspx

The normal distribution is symmetric, so the median and the mean occur in the same place. (In the case of IQ's, where it's taken to be normal, that would be at 100.) There's distributions that are funny shapes or shifted to one side where this isn't true.

From the chart on the IQ web site, it shows 'cumulative distribution' on the bottom. There's tables for a certain distance away from the center of the normal distribution for the 'area under the curve' - the amount of the population that will be affected.

The website states that the standard deviation is about +/0 15 IQ points outside of 100. At 1 standard deviation, 15.87% would be outside on the upper end, and 15.87% would be outside on the lower end. This means that 15.87% of people have an IQ lower than 85, and 15.87% have an IQ above 115.

There's two main challenges with using normal stats to analyze problems, especially in experiments:
  • You need a few data points to accurately estimate the mean, and a lot to estimate variance (standard deviation);
  • You need to confirm that what you're studying actually follows the normal distribution. There are 'goodness of fit' tests to test this, which again would require quite a bit of testing.

An example of this is if you polled all of your friends' IQ's, you might find that you have a lot of either very gifted or un-gifted friends and the average might be 80 or 120. You'd need to test a lot of people to find that the mean IQ of the world is 100, and that IQ follows the normal curve.

I was at the gym: me and my buddy were talking about insurance for SS bikes; random dude joins the conversation and says R6 is the best bike; i told him i can't afford insurance cause i'm <25; he said he's <25 and rides without insurance! when x-mas lights go on, he flies away

i teared in laughter, these people do exist :D

The issue with those losers is something will happen to him and his family will be all wanting to sue the sh*t out of anything or anyone involved. That and they help add to the stats that make our insurance higher. Someone says that to me in the gym and they'll meet with a swift kick in the junk.

How in hell do you figure it would be more expensive for me if that guy in the gym has no insurance? I think you been drinking the insurance kool-aid again, so this means that my Rogers cable bill will be more because my neighbor steals cable from them?

Actually they would use that as an excuse for higher rates. Just like at stores they have to raise the price if people are stealing stuff. That's the excuse, anyway.

Is rogers going to have to pay 30,000 dollars in damages to the person he runs into?

Peggy you never disappoint

I am 17 and got quoted 4 grand a year on a GS500F so i bought one, then when i called the insurance company back they said there rates went up and now its gonna be 5 grand. so i had to sell it and buy a 250 (which i pay 4gs for for liability only)
The big problem is that its not just SS's that young people cant afford to insure its any bike over 250cc weather it be a cruiser or a dual sport or whatever. ive looked into every style of bike and us "bros" as you call us cant get a reasonable price, even if you are a responsible driver and want a mid sized cruiser your still screwed.

Congrats on the 250 :)

I never said I agree with it or that it's right but any excuse they can find and use they will.
