Title says it all.
I know nothing about this system as when I started driving and riding there was only one licence category and when they changed to the M series our licences were automatically converted to GM.
So need to know what kid needs.
Website is not very clear.
Does he have his car license yet at all? I thought I remembered reading that if you had your full M then you were given your G1.but I think you still need to do the rest of the graduated licensing from G2M then finally GM once you pass the car road test...
Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong
"Motorcycles, including a limited-speed motorcycle (motor scooter) and a motor-assisted bicycle (moped)Holders may also drive a Class G vehicle under the conditions that apply to a class G1 licence holder." http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/classes.shtml
I believe holding an M grants you the same privilege as a G1, in that you can drive with a passenger who has their full G lic. for 5 years, during daylight hours - however, they would still need to actually obtain their G1 by taking the written test in order to advanced to G2, and finally G.

To get an M1, you write a G1 test + the moto portion. So, if you don't already have a G-class, you get a G1M1 by default.
But is it possible to get that G1 expired while you work your way through the M-class ? I think that's the real question. And if the license type says "M" only, then I suspect it does expire, and G1 is required once again.
Its tough for him to get off work to get to the driver centre so trying to do some ground work.
I think he let some part of the G expire even tho he has his full M as he was driving legally before.
If he had a G1/G2 then they'd definitely expire after some time. My buddy had his G2 for 5 years and 'forgot' to go for the G so it ended up expiring and then back to G1 for him. I think if the G expires you just renew and don't need to go through the whole graduating license system again (I know because my mom let her G lapse as she wasn't paying attention). They just renewed her G and she was back on her way.
In relation to the G1/G-class expiring, I have read/heard that if your G-class license expires (i.e. if I were to never get my G2 or G in the 5-year period I have to get my full M), you actually lose your M-class along with it. This makes it sound like you MUST also obtain a full G license in order to maintain your M class -- is there any truth to this?
I don't own a car, and as a result am in no rush to get my full G (though likely will anyway.) I just worry that letting my G1 expire means I'd have to start over again at M1 again as a result, even if I were never intending to drive a car.
I went through the reverse. Started out by writing two or three tests. Went through GM1, GM2, GM.
I don't think that there is any special privilege for M holders in obtaining a G.
(Any M holder is the equivalent of having a G1, but that's a red herring for getting a licence.)
My son just went and wrote his G1.
He's taking lessons, so he should be able to do the G2 driving test in eight months (normally 12).
The G test can be taken 12 months after obtaining the G2.
Yours would be in the same boat. G1 8-12 months. G2 12 months. G
I'd recommend the lessons, because he won't be picking up your bad habits, and if he picks up someone else's you can help him later.
Edit: He can always check when he goes in to see if he's writing the test or obtaining an upgrade licence.
Not sure if he'll need another id and proof of address. Might want to bring one in case.
There might be some deal whereby if you wrote the M1 test within a certain amount of time you won't have to write the G1 over again.
