Is there enough demand for a middle-weight sport-tourer?

I sure like mine.

Mind you, I ride with a Sprint RS rider and he sure likes his bike too. The Sprint 955's are very closely matched to VFR's and a bit faster. With a bit more money to spend, and more tolerance for parts and maintenance, a Sprint ST 1050 would be pretty damn cool. Same with a K1200S/K1300S.

My bike is quick enough and makes great noises, but I wouldn't say it's over-the-top fast. I do like the torque and low-rpm noises, which keeps me out of trouble - I don't feel like I need to redline every shift.

I'm surprised Yamaha didn't really do much with the FZ8/Fazer 8. Ignoring other brands, it's still an odd duck in the Yamaha lineup. Beginner? FZ6R. Power? FZ1. More Handling? R6 More of both? R1. Tourer? FJR1300.

If they enlarged the subframe (for better seating/cargo), offered luggage, peg/bar adjusters and a removeable fairing (Vetter-style) so you could go naked on Sundays, faired on tours/colder weather.

My take on the FZ8/Fazer 8 (never having ridden one) is that it gives a bike like the Ninja 650, SV650 and lower-end Monsters but with a bit more shove, without the ludicriousness and insurance headache of an FZ1 or a Z1000. I think it hits a bit of a 'sweet spot' there.

I agree that a sport-touring version would be great and that it's a bit of a missed opportunity. If you want a ready-made middle-weight tourer, it's the $15k F800GT or the adventure-looking V-Strom.

Of course, you could spend $2k in the Twisted Throttle catalogue and get all that kit.

OP is right, there's not a lot of choices of middle-weight sport-tourers, I'm looking for one too, let's say a Fazer-style one or SV one with a 750cc engine.

Someone here mentioned a Ninja 1000cc... c'mon do you call that a midle-weight sport-tourer?

BMW F800ST used, or the new F800GT.

Not as porky as the VFR and far more flickable. Fantastic gas mileage, grunt, and standard heated grips.

Look no further.

Well just to throw my 2 cents. If we had a decent demand on this continent, bikes like the Yamaha TDM 900 are fantastic for covering km single or 2 up. I own one in Europe and did a 4000 km tour with my wife this summer. We did not feel the km's. Enough wind protection, seating is comfortable all in all a great bike. Too bad we here are limited in a way. Vstroms, GS 800, Honda CB600/1000 should do the job here.

I was pretty even behind the Yellow F800S I was following on Terra Nova road

hehe - really too bad there is cop concern on that road..Urge is to twist it out. Tho the occasional gravel makes it "interesting"

We were going 'get a ticket' speed rather than 'go to jail' speed. I hear you 'tho, it's a gorgeous road but with occasional gravel and cops every so often (but not as bad as Forks!).

It's a nice length unlike the Forks and it's got a nice mix of curves. Worth the trip tho. Some other okay roads up there.

There are MANY people that sport-tour on SV650s and Ninja 650's 2 up... There are many bikes that fit the middle weight sport tourer category...
