Insurance / Training Course - Monopoly

Dang it!

So I purchased a cheap motorcycle thinking I could run it for a year or so and get my insurance down for next year when I buy a KLR 650 or a DR 650 or similar. I bought a 1981 Yamaha Exciter 185cc for $100 (see project tutorials thread), fixed it up and it is looking like it will be like $2000 to insure it!! Not only that I sat my M1, booked the M1 exit for a few weeks and was looking to get the lot done for $57. Not anymore.

After a call to TD, a) they wont insure a bike over 30 years old like this one and b) the Training course is mandatory with TD it seems. John Duffy has not got this bike on the system, and statefarm wont insure me because I only got my G license last year. I have been driving for 10 years and have recently moved from the UK, we have a reciprocal agreement meaning I can exchange my UK license directly for a full G but the date of issue is the date I exchanged it for the G.

That is my rant over, but I cannot bear to pay $2k to insure a bike that cost me $300 odd to build. Dropping another $375 on the training course will not be the end of the world I suppose.

I have been riding for a long time, ridden half of the way around Asia etc, and competed in British MX. Just frustrated that they have me by the 'short and curlies'

Any friendly suggestions other than go home lol?

Welcome to Ontario, enjoy your stay.

That said I'd recommend the course. I've ridden in England and it's much different.

Yeah its looking like most of the major insurance companies will not take bikes that are over 25 - 30 years old and have the training course as a mandatory requirement. I will take the course just to get more choice when it comes to insurance.

Thank you for the welcome Macs, just very frustrated that you do not have the choice. Makes me think about my Rogers internet package, but that is another story for another day :)

First world problems I suppose lol

I understand your issue, came from Quebec with a full drivers license 4 years ago. Id been driving for about 5 years (through the graduated licensing and all from the other province) Id been taking my time so because i hadnt had my full Quebec drivers license for OVER 2 years, they switched me back to G2..

I couldnt believe it.
Cash grab.
Ive noticed a lot of insurers base themselves on the time you got your M1...not how long youve been insured (with the ones ive called of course..)

That is interesting, I am taking the training course this week, not the end of the world, I will just miss the $450 could have purchased a good pair of boots and a jacket!

The best of luck to you!

Always, always, always get an insurance quote before you buy a bike. Can't stress this enough, avoids situations like these.

Ive been here for about 4 years so i have my full G now (and my broker was considerate enough to put me as a "G" owner because of past experience...)
Now on to the M1exit :D

Giesen, gotcha! But you know, for a 30 year old, 185cc bike? The course is proving to be a little fun, I get to try a few different bikes and with a good group of people too.

On another note, one place that I did get a quote for the Yammy Exciter was only another $200 to insure a Yamaha WR250X, so I will be purchasing one of those instead.

Thanks guys,

Jack
