Immobolizers

Is this the only defense from theft? Which bikes other than most italian bikes have it?

I dont think those work very well for motorcycles since the trend is picking the bike up and loading it into a minivan, not actually hot wiring the bike and riding it away..All it really does IMO is ads a little extra cost to getting a stolen bike running after its been stolen, they dont help prevent the theft...

Yamahas have chipped keys since 06 I believe, BMW's have them.....Kawasaki has chipped key in Europe but not here for some reason...I think Suzuki has them in north america now also

The thief could care less about a running bike.It's chopped up and parted out most of the time.
 
i believe the new 2013 zx6r has an immobilizer chip in the key, but then again, that's not going to do anything

I don't think it does, I just picked mine up a week ago and didn't notice anything to make me think it had an immobilizer. I will check later today
 
I don't think it matter what you get or install. If they want your bike they will get it. Best I can offer is to practice good diligence when parking or storing you bike. Having full insurance helps if you feel your bike is worth it.

Yamaha FJR's have an immobilizer. The deterrent is you can never get it started without a new harness from Yamaha and they won't sell you that unless you have the proper documentation. So a theif's only option is to part it out. I also use the ignition steering lock and a padlocked cable/chain. No guarantees it won't get stolen, but at least I'm not an easy target.

There are hundreds of salvage yards in the US that sell complete lock sets with matching ECU. Or you can simply pay lock smiths to reprogram a new key
So its not that hard to get it running, its just a small added cost...Compared to making a regular key. This has been done with higher end cars for years, its old technology, just newish for motorcycles

I forgot about salvage parts. I'll take your word for it that it can be swapped out. As far as reprogramming a key, my bike came with a third key (with a chip in it) that you have to use to get the bike to accept a new ignition key code. How would a locksmith get around that?

The key you have is used to make new keys using the same coding and use features of the ECU that are locked without it, a locksmith will reprogram the ECU to accept a different chip programming that they will make for it, or access the original chip code and program a new key chip using that.....Again this has been done with high end cars for years, a lot of locksmiths dont do bikes, but there are ones out there that can...

Everything in this world can be messed with by someone, when new technology comes out its only a matter of time before someone finds a back door way around it...

R6 has had immobilizer and chipped keys since at least 2006 and R1 since at least 2007.

R6 has had and chipped keys since at least 2006 and R1 since at least 2007.

Never know they started that early! My friend with 2006 R6 was quoted $3,800 to replace immobilizer by the dealer :(

Replacement was expensive.

But that's only if you lost the Red Master Key and the two Blacks. The Master Key was unique to each immobilizer unit. "Lose the Red and You're Dead"; You had nothing else to reprogram the Black keys. That's why Yamaha said in the manual never ride with the Master in the unit. Hope this clears some info up.
