I Almost Got Killed By A Turtle Crossing The Highway

So I was riding with the Markham Possee today (a brotherhood of hardcore, ferocious SS riders) on Highway 48, between Stouffville Rd and 19th Ave and I saw everybody in front of me skewing rapidly an object at 100 km/h. As I got closer it looked just like an empty small brown paper bag so I just went in a straight line... my front tire went on top and saw this thing flipping 5 ft in the air through my rearview mirror, my bike skewed to the right right into loose dirt/rocks in the shoulder and I almost went into the ditch at 100 km/h but managed to control the bike in a space of about 140 ft. I got off the bike to see how the guys at the back fared, the filipino rider behind me had turned white and took off his helmet wiping sweat off his forehead, he claims the turtle passed within 6 inches at eye-level from his head. Can you imagine if it would had hit him in the face at 100 km/h? LOL

Now where the hell did thing thing crawl out from? There were NO ponds or ditches full of water on both sides of the highway, it was in the middle of nowhere, there's just a house on the west side of the highway I think. A small black car saw everything and pulled over to make sure everything was okay, we picked the turtle up and try to see if he stuck his head out, he did not, even after 10 mins, I think it croaked. Close call I would say no?

P.S. Why can't I upload the rest of the pics? The photo manager of this website is saying they are too large even though I have resized them 4 times smaller.

So no one in your super-duper excellent group pointed on the road to tell other riders in the group that there is a problem on the pavement?

I once saw a guy low side on a crushed pop can ... so you now have learned that running over stuff no matter how innocuous looking is a bad idea ... file that away for next time

So;
- everyone in front of you is swerving
- you observe something in the roadway
- you run it over anyway???
- then lol about the fact that you launched a projectile at another rider's head???

I was wearing dark sunglasses so I did not have 100% vision, the thing looked like an empty brown paper bag, do you know over how many newspaper sheets I have run over in the highway?

Good plan when operating a vehicle.

Lmfao, was thinking the the same thing... Wearing something that interferes with your vision (even though it shouldn't) AND admitting it too

Just get a smoked visor, trust me it doesn't interfere.

Ferocious!!!

we are taught...NO EMERGENCY MANEUVERS FOR SMALL CRITTERS ON THE ROAD..JUST GO OVER THEM..true saying from RTI instructors

by the way... why no ATGATT?

Emergency procedure? Avoiding a turtle....that everyone on the road is avoiding. ????

FFS, now RTI is going to have to specify small FURRY critters.

da

even if it was a paper bag you don't know what's in it and other riders apparently with better vision went around it....or were you fixated?

Don't run over anything if you can avoid it....even sheets of paper can land wrapped around your head and then you have no vision.

The instructure is correct for squeeze toys like squirrels ....I've hit a small raccoon and it just went crunch but you could have avoided and it's very fortunate you did not hurt another rider.

Lesson learned we hope...

You weren't almost killed by a turtle....you were almost injured by not exercising good judgement......usually the case.
Wonder if the turtle survived....poor kid behind had a good reason to play pale face.

a rabbit almost killed me the other day. but it was 7 feet tall... and had a machete. true story.

turtles have been around since the dinosaur ages. they are survivors. they are everywhere. if the shell wasn't broken, its probably alive. they can get shell shocked pretty good, and they'll hide inside for quite a while.
