So,, legally? , in Canada?.. how many riders can be on a bike on the road?. And what age is legal?.
I know it is socially acceptable right now to have only one passenger.. but i wonder if I met the legal requirements of the HTA... would a cop still have grounds for some other charge?
If I have a 5yr old on their own seat behind me.. with a back rest, and footpegs, that their feet are on.. and I have a 3yr old, on the seat in front of me,,against the tank.. on footpegs I have added to the frame, their feet are on the pegs... both have helmets that fit their head... ,,, do you think their is a problem,,, lol ... it is done all over the [3rd] world,, just wondered if any civilized place, or Canada allows it...

Good question! Like you said if the child's feet reach the pegs then it's perfectly legal. Doesn't matter their age AFAIK. The only thing that might get you in trouble is that the pegs for the rider in front of you were not stock from the factory which is how the bike gets the road safety from the Ministry.

Interesting proposal. I'm not a HTA lawyer but I suspect you might have a spot of bother with the front child. The only surefire work around would be putting him/her in a cat suit and aviator goggles.

Some people should not have kids

Agreed.

I'm not looking forward to seeing this on the news... Keep the kids off, they tend to fall asleep or fall off... Rather you risk your life and not the life of a child.

Teenagers are a different story, but they won't like you or think you're cool by the time it's "safe" enough to have them be competent in the back lol.

Looks like a few people should mind their own parenting buisness as that wasn't the question. Do what you want with your kids and others will do the same. Kids are "competent" to ride as a passenger before they're a teenager, get a grip.

Well all over southeastern asia last year I saw multpile families of 3 on mopeds.. mothers holding babies with their feet to one side of the bike with traffic flying by them...I thought to myself WOW some of the accidents must be horrendous......

Sure enough near the end of my 3 month backpacking trip I saw 3 grown men on a single moped in Cambodia get creamed by an oncoming truck like flies on the windshield. Needless to say their 1mm thick .10 cent plastic helmets didn't do them very well. All dead instantly. Couldn't sleep for a while after that.

You can have 30 sets of pegs on the bike, doesn't mean you can have 30 people on the bike...lol In places where you see 5 people, (mom dad nd three kids) all on one bike the don't even wear helmets.

It is set by the seating positions so 2 seats means 2 people max. You could "try" to get away "but your honor the seat is big and the kids small so I fit two kids on one seat" argument...

Epic fail..lol

Discussions on politics, religion or riding 2up with kids under 16..I'm going to start making popcorn now. LOL.

Ok, sidecar!!!

Also , what about those little trailers for bicycles? They cold up to four kids? Or some kind of welded and bolted on system to strap them in?

I don't think it's fair to take someone on a bike unless their aware of the risk. But your kids, your decision.

Reg 596. 10(2) & (3).

(2) No person shall be carried as a passenger on a motorcycle operated on a highway except.
a) in a side car designed to carry a passenger; or
b) subject to sub(3), on a seat that is situated to the REAR of the seat provided for the operator and that is securely fastened to the motorcycle (meaning the seat) which shall be equipped with foot rests for the passenger.

(3) A person who is a passenger on a motorcycle operated on a highway and who is occupying the seat referred to in (2)(b) shall sit astride the seat in such a manner that his or her feet are placed upon the foot rests referred to in (2)(b).

I don't really see an age restriction so long as the feet of your passenger can touch the foot rests. It also says that so long as you are not on a "highway" (HTA definition) you can ignore all of that. Sit how you want, and have as many people on it as you want.

Why would any "civilized" place allow this to happen....only 3rd world cannibalistic countries would allow such barbarism!

My kids have been riding with me and my wife since they were 5. They both wear full body harnesses that attach to the driver and have a small handlebar they can hold. They both love the bikes. I also grew up riding with my dad, in the 70s he put the kids in front.
