If you get a temporary 10 day plate so that you can repair your bike prior to your safety cert and registration, you can ride without an exposed plate. The MOT told me this is Ok, just carry the paper plate with you so that in the event you are stopped you can produce your plate.
I have never seen a bike on the street without a plate. You all should visit me in the merry land of Scarborough.
