You Tube link - http://youtu.be/JNGD9AAIfFU - Please watch the full video, some interesting stats come up.

Some interesting points coming from these guys. Especially since we can't do it here.

Not sure how to embed on this forum.

ALSO, I'm not advocating anything here, just thought it was an interesting video.

They state it reduces rear end collisions but they never showed how much an increase in riders lane splitting being hit by a car driver chaging lanes as the bike went by and the driver didn't see them!

Want to reduce the chance of being rear ended in traffic? Here's what you do:

If you have time as you slow down, flash your brake light. It grabs people's attention. (I actually also do this in my truck since I leave enough space in front that I rarely need to slam on the brakes. This slows the tailgater down behind me so I don't get rear ended. This extra space saved the rear end of my truck this summer when traffic came to a sudden stop and I left enough space in front of me to punch the gas when the truck behind me wasn't stopping in time. What would have really messed up a brand new 4000km truck ended up just putting my hitch through his bumper)

When you are stopped, leave space between you and the vehicle in front. If you're following proper lane blocking rules, you should be in the proper tire track. This allows you to have an avenue of escape between the vehicle in front of you and the vehicles stopped in the lane beside you. And then, you do your shoulder check/watch your mirrors. If someone ain't gonna stop you slip in between the two cars and you won't be the meat in the steel sandwich.

You should be watching your mirrors all the time. There is almost no reason to have a surprise from the back if you're paying attention.

I would love to lane split legally when traffic is either stopped or barely moving. However, I don't trust the attitudes in Ontario that someone wouldn't purposely cut me off.

Heres the first of many one sided "lane splitting is safer" threads of the year...

Lane Splitting is a nono. Filter on the other hand :thumbright:

I would have to agree with this but I don't due it due to the risk of a "stunting" charge...

Great Quote:
"It is my job to make sure [that cars] don't run into me"
..an idea that many riders don't understand. WE control the bikes. It isn't a cagers' fault if they don't see us. We have to anticipate it and react accordingly.
It grinds my gears when riders flip off or get angry with other drivers. This sense of entitlement of the road is misunderstood.

Common sense that it's completely safe. Split or filter. If you aren't at that level of skill yet then don't do it. Consider this though, many riders out there split during their first season. If you've been riding for longer than that and don't do it in spots where you can get away with it, I must ask you what your business on a motorcycle is.

It's all black and white eh? My business? Lulz. What's yours Frootloops?

I've been riding on the street 4 years now, been either on mx tracks or trails on everything from sleds, 3 wheelers, mx bikes etc since I was about 10 and I still don't split... I guess I must be a big pussy, despite how bad *** racing motocross is.

I don't do it for two main reasons: People are idiots. They either can't keep their vehicles in their lane or will purposely attempt to block or run you off the road when you attempt it (even filtering to turn right at a red light I've had it done)
#2: I really don't need to risk a BS stunting charge just to make up 5 or 10 minutes.

Lane splitting occurs when a motorcycle drives between two lanes of stopped or slowly moving cars, usually in traffic jams. If an accident happens while a motorcycle is lane splitting, there's a good chance that fault for the accident will be attributed to the motorcycle rider. If the insurance adjuster or court finds that the motorcyclist's carelessness was a substantial cause of the accident, the rider is out of luck when it comes to recovering damages

Actually that's filtering. Splitting is when you are splitting the lane while at speed. e.g. go between cars to pass them AT speed..

Proper.

There should be a rule setup on accounts where you can't post about gear, lane splitting or waving until you pass the 100 post mark at the very least.

I would love to filter but I too am a puss for getting a ticket. I wouldn't try splitting on roads that are not legal to split. Imagine lane splitting in Brampton. Omg

What kind of a ticket do you get for filtering?

Too bad the number of posts a person has doesn't increase their credibility.
