Kickstand actually, but why? Seems silly to take something stone simple that works and reengineer it to be complex and introduce moving parts that may wear and fail. Just because?

Very interesting.
I think that accepting this as the "better way" would be just as hard as accepting a "square shaped wheel" as the better way.

I don't think we will find out the reason why they have filed for the patent or if they will every actually put it into production.

I'm no patent lawyer or know anything about the way patents work etc.
But I do know that companies often do file many patents of many different variation of ONE idea or product just to protect the "technology" from other competitors etc.

I often like reading about tools etc, as I am a bit of a tool junkie. This is a common practice between tool companies like DeWalt, Milwaukee, Bosch, Festool, Ryobi, Fein, Makita, etc.
I would only expect the same principal to follow in other industries like automotive, technology (electronics), software, medical drugs, as well.
 
I suppose if it's adjustable to allow the kickstand to be extended to different lengths to suit different parking angles, it would make sense. There's been a few times over the years where I've been forced to park in places where the angles mean that your bike is either leaning over uncomfortably far, or uncomfortably little.

But those sorts of situations are VERY far and few between.
 
Isn't the whole weight on the kickstand then resting on the small pin (or pins) in those channels? If they shear, I'm assuming the spring compresses and the bike topples over? Maybe I am not understanding :confused:
 
Those honda engineers have way too much time on their hands it seems, quick someone tell them to make an affordable middleweight V4 naked!

That's how I see it, and why I don't think it's a good design. Over time corrosion, wear, even dirt accumulated in the mechanism might cause it to fail. I also wonder the weight capacity of it, it might be fine on a scooter as illustrated but what happens on a 600 lb plus bike? How substantial would it need to be?

Agreed 100%...something like a cb650 with a 500-750cc V4 would end up in my garage real quick. With a normal kickstand of course lol.

How about on a 900 pound Goldwing? Of course it will have at least one sensor and an auto deploy requiring its own sensor and systems of relays, can't have too many relays on a bike. All run through an on board computer under the seat that has to be removed to change just about everything else on the bike. Should add a couple of hundred to the price of the wing and another hundred for annual service. Any chance of this becoming a motorcycle MCAS. Bike is leaning therefore rider is getting off. Deploy sidestand. Rider gets off in a turn. Bike crashes.
 
Do you guys even have to ask why? There's engineers that have to be kept busy and to justify their salaries they come up with these dumb novelties such as "lane assist" in cars.

Ugh, I hate lane assist. My car has the full suite of active safety, that's the only one I have turned off.
 
It would be better if they put centre stands on bikes again. A telescopic kick might be handy on an ADV or Dirt bike where you need the clearance, but they're really fixing a problem that doesn't exist.
 
I could make a side stand that is electric powered but who would want it?
 
Might be thinking 20-30 years in the future, when everything on the bike is electronic, there are stands on both sides, and the bike raises and lowers for you.
 
In all the 16 years i owned my 900lb wing, the sidestand was never a problem. Having a reverse gear has a lot to do with that.
