Homicidal Cagers. Why do they get away with it?

This is most definitely (and disturbingly) on the rise. Personally, and I don't know why, but my own bike and presence seems to scare the hell out of cagers. I get a lot of cagers that (very nervously) pull over when they see me in their rear view mirror. But the stories I'm hearing are from riders that look very vulnerable (to me).

SS bikes don't seem to be the target of these homicidal cagers, nor are they after the grey beards with straight pipes. They're after vulnerable noobs on wimpy looking bikes. And that's a scary thought as this group is the least likely to know what to do in this situation.

Nothing scares me on a bike, a liter bike, but what would scare me is being on the road with these cagers on a 125 or 250. I can jet past any car in a nano-second. The thought of having to go through three or four gears to pass a car does scare me. I don't know what that says about the whole 600 SS as a first bike debate? The big four are manufacturing these little bikes as starter bikes, but I'll bet they didn't anticipate this problem! Perhaps a non SS like a GS 500 would be a better choice as you'll have the nuts to get yourself out of a bad situation.

There are many pro-active remedies to getting a cager off your tail. I've seen it done, and it scares the **** out of the said cager. Some of my friends carry an extra fork nut on the triple trees. pennies, ball-bearings etc. Only down-side is if they get your plate, you will get the charge. *This method will get any cager off your back, but that's bad advice for this forum as the vast majority of the members here seem to be new riders. So, just take that advice as a piece of history.

Best advice? Be calm, try and get the plate number (even a partial), pull over, call *OPP (that's star OPP) and exaggerate the hell out of the call. "The driver of the car seemed to be pointing something that looked like a gun at me as he tried to run me down..." The key word being "gun." Chances are all existing calls that are being held will be put on hold and this cager will be hunted down by the OPP and dragged out of their car at gun-point and their car searched by a K-9. The cager will get exactly what he/she deserves, and you will remain a victim as your limited vision may have been mistaken, or the crazy (possibly impaired) cager could have tossed the gun?

FWIW, I would only use this method in a severe, clearly "homicidal" attempt on your life as the OP has clearly stated.

Well i know on the 125 you get some dikhead drivers who want to race all the time. If you see them tailgating, slow down below the limit and use the slow down hand motion. They will either slow or pass you in the next lane.

It is actually more thrilling than scary weaving in between hostile cagers and getting ahead using the centerline. Ive even done it in the presence of cops without using signals or anything and they didnt seem to care.

this has little to do with being a cager... she is just a piece of ****.

Always carry a pocket full of small stones and no one will follow too close. When you're prepared, rides are uneventful - must be the vibes- lol!

I wonder if this story would have been told if it was a guy in the car laughing at you.

OP should definitely report the dumbas to the police, this is using somebody's life for fun, totally outrageous and unacceptable!

There was once a story on the news about the sheepish-ness of Canadians. It mimicked a story like the OP's.

a) What would an American do?
b) What would a Canadian do?
c) What would a Brit do?

Answers:

a) shoot!
b) point a wagging finger
c) write a letter

You just lived up to your username. If you do nothing, (as most Canadian's will choose to), nothing will happen.

FWIW, reading the OP's story in detail makes me think the chick was probably stoned on oxy or something.

So, in a nutshell, you're advocating:
  • That new riders buy a 600-or-bigger SS to be able to outrun any car, even though "...this group is the least likely to know what to do in this situation.";
  • Assault the offending vehicle with hardware; or
  • Call in a false weapons report to the police.
Personally, I think any of the above will lead to fulfilling your signature.

So over the last year and a half of riding, I've gotten used to the typical idiot cagers, tailgaters, aggressive drivers etc. But what I refuse to accept, is the ones who have a near-homicidal attitude toward us on the road.

A few times I've nearly been run off the road by a cager, and I've let it slide. But tonight I was riding with some good friends of mine, and some stupid ***** in her Civic purposely followed me within less than half a foot, in traffic, and repeatedly floored it toward my back-end when I had nowhere else to go. (2-lane road, traffic to my side and my friends in front of me with traffic ahead of them.)

Most of the time I just let it go as being an aggressive/stupid driver, but when she floored it toward me, she came within what felt like less than an inch of ramming me off the road. I had nowhere to go, unless I lane-split, which would have left my less-experienced friend behind to deal with her instead. The whole time, I could see her laughing in my rear-view mirror (she was THAT close.) Once the traffic to our right moved up a little, she floored it again, nearly clipped my right side, and swerved over to the right lane and started to take off. Next light was red, she turned right through the intersection, U-turned to turn back up the street, and floored it again. The light changed a few seconds later, and I chased her. The whole time she didn't use her signals, made abrupt lane changes/turns, obviously trying to evade me. She actually drove home, and I followed her. I will admit, I did not intend to -- I planned only to get her plate# -- but where she lived was much closer than I'd anticipated.

To put it lightly, I had choice words for her, and I probably woke up the entire neighbourhood. I would have let it go if she hadn't sat there staring at me, with a huge grin on her face. But this piece of **** clearly had no regard for me, my friends, or any other human being on the road around her.

I am tired of our fellow riders -- friends, family -- being hurt or killed because of wastes of existence such as her. Yes, I can and will call the police, but when that most likely leads to nothing being done ("THIS time"), what good does it do when she does it again and actually kills someone?

Cool story bro, I know, but there has to be something better than this. There has to be some way to wake these people up and make them realize we're human beings too. We have families and loved ones too, just like them, so why do we not seem to matter?

Although I wasn't there to witness this stuff, but if you followed her home, I would have had a quick chat with the lady to see what was on her mind at the time. I mean don't instigate a fight or some sort, but just a conversation, so see what excuse they would come up with. Also should have grab a few photos of the place and neighbourhood while in the area.

I'm glad my gloves have carbon fibre knuckles cause when I punch a ***** I want her to feel it. I can't say I wouldn't have put a fist through her window.

To the OP

I completely feel your pain. The same thing happened to me last night on DVP. I was riding my bud was in his car and this d-bag actually gunned it for me.

He swerved into the lane AIMING for me as I was next to him. I dropped back to avoid collision and let him go....swapped lanes to catch up to my bud in his car, and the d-bag switched lanes and swerved into my lane again. I went into the shoulder and passed...he drove so close to the backend of the bike I could see him smirking.

I finally got ahead of my bud in his car and signaled him that there was an issue, the d-bag went around traffic and did the same thing...the minute my bud saw...he went behind the car, turned on his highbeams rode his bumper, as I backed off into a safer position.

Wasn't until the car realized I was with another car that he backed off.

I don't get the hate for bikers, I was on a smaller bike last night, and was riding at speed limit safely, didn't do anything I thought that should provoke that kind of reaction.

PS. I thought about taking down the plate, but was more concerned about avoiding collision and watching the rest of traffic trying to avoid being hit by this d-bag...my buddy was too ****** to even think about getting the plate...I had to make him slow down and back off so HE didn't get into a collision.

Sounds more like love than hate :)

I'm convinced that the reason motorcycle gloves have reinforced knuckles is for the sake of punching out cagers more effectively. I mean, if you're going to fall on your hands, you're not going to put your hands palms-up for the fall.

And if not punching cagers, then punching out mirrors:

Exactly. Lol. I'm trying to keep calm and carry on, but I'm quite certain that one day I'm gonna just lose it on someone...

Not a hell of a lot. Just like another cager I confronted once before, she wouldn't open the car window/door, and sat inside with that stupid grin on her face, and I assume with the door locked (I wasn't checking since it might have led to an assault charge...) All she did was sit there and continue to grin/laugh until I slammed her window (didn't break, damnit) and walked away,

i would have stood there and called the police, but the moment you hit her window, you lost any and all grounds for a complaint as far as any attending officer would have been concerned.

some experiences:

had a teen in a mini-van riding my buddy's rear wheel for several km along monk rd. we weren't on a spirited ride or anything, just +10. but when we tried to pull away, he tried to keep up as if it were a "catch me if you can" race, which we didn't want to be caught up in. but when we slowed down, the teen wouldn't pass, until we came to a near stop at which point he finally took off.

had a dude in a sports car ride my friends back wheel on the niagara parkway. he was literally a foot off the back wheel of her 500. he looked like he couldn't care less about the risk he put her in.

i was travelling north on a country road by myself early one morning when i came upon an suv going 15kmph BELOW the posted 80. i went to pass and they swerved into me to block my way, so i dropped back. when i slowed down to give this guy some distance, he slowed down too. so i tried to pass him again, only to be cut off again. this happened twice. on the third attempt, i just dropped two gears and cranked it, passing him as he swerved fully into the oncoming lane in an attempt to run me off the road. this psychopath then accelerates to try and catch up to me before giving up after maybe a half km
later i got a letter from OPP asking me to explain my aggressive and reckless riding which presumably the driver of the suv made a complaint about. sheesh.

i had a pair of teenage girls drive erratically in front of me on avenue just north of bloor, like they couldn't decide whether to go east or west on bloor. they cut me off (hard) in an attempt to make a left onto cumberland from the CURB lane of avenue south. i gave them the horn and they gave me the finger. there was a complete traffic jam at the time, so i was able to pull along side of them to give them a piece of my mind. they just laughed and giggled, until i got out of my car. and then they freaked out and wouldn't make eye contact, staring straight ahead.

moral of the story: people are idiots. being behind the wheel of an auto makes them feel invincible and insulated from the outside world.

just treat every cager as if they're out to kill you, and you should do fine. :/

This seems to sum things up from what I've seen and heard from other riders (including those who've posted here). For whatever reason, there are a number of drivers out there that have absolutely NO respect for the fact they are driving a motor vehicle which can be used as a weapon.

They think it's funny. They think it's a game (even when they know they're doing something wrong).... They think it's anything but the serious matter it is! It's completely stupid and bizarre...but it seems to be how it is these days :(

I came across a woman whose strategy in these situations is literally to laugh at the person she's upset.

She actually gets a kick out of further pissing off whoever she's just ****** off. She just doesn't care.
When I asked her why, she stated that she thinks "road rage" is silly and doesn't feel any rationale person will escalate their behaviour in response to her mockery. The fact that she may have done something on the road to have upset the person in the first place is completely lost on her.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid one day she is going to come across somebody who is not content to just sit there and fume at her.

This thread is somewhat alarming. This much disregard for human life is surprising. Please tell me you guys are kidding when it comes to this level of stupidity on the road. I can understanding new levels of stupidity, but intentionally putting someone's life at risk isn't stupid, it's psychotic.

That and there are laws in place to protect the dumb people and nothing much to do to deal with the people causing the issues. Was on a ride with the gf, and just as we were pulling out of a gas station, this guy comes up and hits her kill switch claiming his friend said to do it and he didn't know what would happen. She was lucky she didn't loose balance and fall over or anything, but people like that should be knocked out and put down a notch, he'd think three times about doing something similar next time. Instead if you get mad they feed off it, and you touch them you go to jail for assault. What makes it worse, is even if she did drop the bike, there would be no proof and the guy would get away with it.
