Is it just me or have there been an increase in the number of "I parked the bike, went to 'blah blah blah', came out and my bike was knocked over" threads this year?

Thankfully some (relatively) 'happy endings' of supportive witnesses, etc. but I don't recall seeing so many posts about this experience.

Society is going to hell. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions.

I was the victim of 3 hit and runs in 18 months (all in my cars).

The higher the insurance costs, the less likely drivers are willing to stay at the collision scene.

hit and run threads are boring. We need more running from the cop threads or I banged a hot chick on my bike thread.

Pretty much this.
That, and a lowered sense of personality responsibility and honour.

I think the problem also becomes greater as our population grows, and our population in the GTA certainly has grown. A driver will tend to enjoy more anonymity among the masses in the big city than they would in a small town. You're less likely to know the owner of the car you hit in the big city, so that removes that incentive to stick around. Potential witnesses are less likely to get involved as they are also more likely to be transient to the immediate area, and the odds of someone being able to personally identify you is smaller.

In a small town, potential witnesses are also more likely to know either you or the owner of the car you hit. That makes the more likely to care, as well as more likely to be able to identify you, perhaps even by name. And in a small town, personal accountability can be much greater. The gossip mill can work to do more damage to you and your family than any hit and run charge would in a big city.

This year seems pretty much like other, recent ones. It's a combination of high insurance costs and what I like to refer to, as The Narcissism Epidemic.

Wed had mine backed into scrcated the right side farings got luck kickstand slid and bike didn't go over but now have marks on my brand new farings. Drive by place everyday to look for truck that was parked when i i did only gone for hour no one else parked near me afterwards

What's funny about this is that when I get into a collision where I know the other driver's insurance is going to go up, I offer to let them pay for the repairs instead of going through insurance. Usually they just screw me around until I end up making the claim anyway.

Getting hit and the driver buggering off sucks. I have noticed though that sometimes riders aren't being very wise in where they park. I'm not suggesting this is the case in any of the recent incidents posted on GTAM, just to be clear. I did see two guys park their bikes in a parking lot last Saturday that I though wasn't wise. They parked at the front of the lot to be closest to the event but they parked at the edge of the parking lot, not in marked parking spaces. Anyone one of a dozen cars backing out would have to be very careful to avoid hitting them. Not the best spot to park, IMO, just to save a few steps.

I'd parked my bike alongside the meter machine, protected by concrete curbs and a light standard. You'd have to drive over the concrete curbs to hit my bike. That's not always possible, I realize. ANytime you have to park on the street it's hard to find a spot that can reduce your chance of being hit.

I see bikes squeezed in between cars all the time with no space. Not sure how the cars get out without hitting them.

There's a reason why I pay an annual parking fee, rather than parking on the street, for nothing.

I was shocked, there is still a few, ok maybe 1 good person still out there, I had a lady hit me in a parking lot and leave a note. I thought it was a joke (fake number) figured I was out. Well Called her, got the estimate and she showed up with the grand and payed for it.. wow... I was speechless. I had to thank her for being so honest.. wow.. I NEVER thought it would happen.

If you park you're bike on the street behind a van, truck or SUV, don't be surprised if your bike gets knocked down. If the driver can't see your bike in the mirror, the more likely your bike will get hit. "But it's the driver's responsibility to ensure there's nothing in the way when reversing… blah, blah, blah :(" Sorry but we don't live in Utopia, this is the real world.

Perhaps it's an unintended consequence of the 24 hour news-cycle? With continuous reports of malfeasance committed by every level of government, all around globe, denting a car in a parking lot is barely worth considering. Our "leaders" simply walk away from whatever mess they create, often with golden handshakes. Why shouldn't the average person do the same, to prevent their insurance premiums from going higher? Not defending, by the way--my car has been anonymously bashed plenty of times. Still makes me see red.
