Helmet vs. No helmet

Real man dont care abt getting faceplanted on the ground without a helmet at 150km/h+

To be honest I thought the numbers would be a lot more in favour of helmets. I'm surprised...

Thanks OP. And I'm not being a sarcastic jerk about it.

It's only been 3 months, not sure if it's enough statistical significance but you don't have to convince me on a helmet's merits.

1200 reports is what everyone called for for the second Hurt Report, not a statistician but they were...

Getting on a motorcycle without a helmet is pretty much natural selection at work. Simply falling backwards and hitting your head against the floor is enough to cause some very serious damage. Let alone going at the speed of traffic on a motorcycle.

Better safe than sorry!

Wait, what? Michigan had BANNED helmets up until three months ago?

The sample size is 300 no-helmet accidents and 900 helmeted accidents? Without knowing the percentage of riders that wear helmets versus those that don't plus a number of other factors its pretty hard to draw many conclusions.

But from this information one could conclude that it is 2.5 more likely you'll die in an accident if not wearing a helmet. That's pretty damn significant to me.

The dark side of this is a story that I keep hearing, since I live right across from Detroit.

Michigan Governor Snyder, a Republican was lobbied hard by insurance companies to pass this under the guise of "freedom to choose". The insurance companies realized that deaths indeed would go up, but the payout costs for death and burial were far cheaper than rehabilitation from severe injury, reducing total costs and increasing return on investment.

wonder when is the cut-off time the study. I currently live in Detroit and I have seen A LOT more people riding without a helmet when the heat wave came last month, vs only a few people riding without one in May.

That's an urban myth.
Even picture above shows that rider without a helmet is more likely to receive an injury that would require a payouts from insurance.

I think if helmet weren't mandatory in Calgary people would still wear it. You've got to pretty damned brave to ride without a helmet in Calgary where almost every cars got cracked windshield and my visor also got a chip in it. Hail storms come out of nowhere and there huge.

Driving through illonois and watching guys on the I-90 with their helmets attached to the bike (out of state plates) made me cringe. At a rest stop I got asked "Why do you wear all that gear? You Afraid?" TO which I said, hell yes I am afraid of falling off and having the scrap the rocks out of my skin one layer at a time. Got weird looks...
