Helmet - Changing padding on loose helmet

I'm surprised, I did a few searches and could not find anything... (other than this).

So my helmet started feeling a bit loose and I was wondering if I could use padding from a different size (same model) to make it more snug?

Right now I have a Medium Joe Rocket RKT-1000. The day I bought it I was at the store for quite a while trying to decide between small and medium. While the small had a really tight fit, it would hurt the back of my head within a minute, the medium also had a nice fit, but did not hurt me. So of course I went with the medium... however now is a bit loose.

Any ideas? And no... I'm not asking for advises such as "buy a new helmet"... I think that's pretty obvious. The thing is that I like this helmet and it has a nice fit... I would like to keep it if possible.

how long have you had it? cause if it isn't that long, maybe a broken in small is actually a better fit.

( i am just guessing though )

Not that long... for about a month.

I don't think the small would fit at all... it hurt a lot in the occipital area of my head.

if its loose after a month.. then thats not the right size...

Look up if your helmet uses the same shell size for small and medium, if they do, you should consider switchign to the small padding.

When I try mediums on in the store they always feel a little more comfortable, but the small always fits properly after a couple of weeks of steady wear. Maybe a small in a different model or brand wouldn't hurt?

I also have a small modular HJC. The sales guy was 100% sure it was the right size for me... but after a 2 hour ride I can't wear it anymore as it applies too much pressure.

I sent Joe Rocket an email asking if I could use a different liner/padding. I'll post back on what they say.

starting to sound like a head shape problem.

I'm almost certain that there was a similar discussion about a month or so back on this very topic (damned if I can find it, though).

The answer is yup, you can normally add/change padding to a helmet to make it fit more snug i.e. I believe there's different liner sizes you can choose based on the shell size (i.e. shall size of the outer portion of the helmet comes in standard sizes, and you "customize" the fit with the liner).

I wish I could find the thread and give credit where credit is due for that answer (the above is paraphrased, of course).

With regards to the pressure you feel using a small helmet - that's not a good sign as you want a helmet to fit snug/tight, but not cause searing pain in any region of the cranium.

Thanks for the video... it does help understand it (also good to know that a dropped helmet is not up for scratch).

It seems that Arai does sell different pads for the same size as the video said. I found a site that sells them (link). But I could not find the same for Joe Rocket... couldn't even find padding for my helmet (found for other models).

I'm going to wait to hear back from Joe Rocket and see if they can give a compatible model and if a small would work on a medium. For now wearing a balaclava helps... it's cold outside anyways.

Hey guys... an update for anyone with Joe Rocket helmets.

I went to Cycle World Superstore and spoke to Kevin (great guy to deal). He checked the Joe Rocket catalog (fashion) and we found replacement pads, however we did not know if they would work. So we called Joe Rocket Canada. The guy who answered didn't seem very sure, but he advised me to get a small replacement padding, and that should work. We ordered the padding (from a distributor called Motovan). It came as a different manufacturer.

So I went for a ride this weekend and it fits great so far. It has the snug feel that I was looking for, and I only had to replace the cheek pads.

I also finally received a reply to the email I had sent and they advised the same...

Wash/Clean the pads, they'll be good as new. No need to purchase new ones.

His issue was a fitment one, not cleanliness...unless of course you're suggesting that washing a new helmet's inner liner helps with sizing?...

nexx helmets offer additional padding kits with every helmet they sell (but make fine tuned fit adjustment of just beef things up again when they get packed in over the years).
you might be able to contact them and find out if you can buy just the padding kit and not have to spend a whole bunch of money and replace all your existing pads.

It doesn't help with sizing but it helps with returning it to its original size. Hours/KM's of use will eventually wear down the pads because of all the face grease/sweat. Washing it returns it to normal, soft, springy, cushiony.

If it was a BRAND New helmet, it would be a sizing issue. If it's used (which it appears to be "it started feeling loose") he can wash it and it'll return to its brand new plushy-ness.

Never thought of it in that way. Makes sense.

Cheers.
