GTAM Member review/feedback

I would have set the thing on fire out of spite if i got jerked around like that.

Yup, old school. I bet you also think a handshake is as good as a contract, and someone's word is their bond. I wish we could go back.

I bet he's still sitting on that lawn mower. Tell me where he was and i'll go offer him $100 for it.

I guess to a degree I do, you can tell who's good on their word usually within the first few minutes of meeting someone. I bought my last bike with a handshake but only because the seller thought I wasn't there to give him cash and take it home right there (which I was and for the price he was asking).

I'm only 29 so I don't know about the good old days but I treat others the way I want to be treated. Jerk me around and our buisness is done. I do also realize **** happens and as long as someone is communicating with me I'm pretty understanding when things don't go as planned.

Maybe I'm just old school or it's the way I was brought up but when somebody asks for $xxx that's the price.

...No.. you just don't know how to "haggle" :D

should be a rule...
If you ask the seller to come to you... you don't negotiate the price.
If you want to negotiate (or think you might), you have to go and see the seller.

It sounds like he implied he was willing to pay the full price anyways. He's just making himself worse by trying to defend himself..

This thread has been a real eye opener about human nature. This should be added to the vast library of Oprahs' teachable moments. Maybe a 2 for 1 package submission with the passive aggressive smashed mirror high mileage TDI VW incident.

Once in a while honor still rules the day..... a few years ago, I was selling some truck parts, prob about 2-3 hundred bucks. I couldn't be home to meet the guy who was driving a pretty good distance, so i told him where the parts were and where to leave the cash. That was the easiest transaction I ever had, lol. Dude was old school, and happy to play ball.

This is a great thread. Many forums out there have a trader score which is displayed right under members name, join date, location and count of posts. You start off with a zero and work your way up as you sell stuff. It can go negative too (sort of like eBay).
Not sure why GTAM doesn't implement something like this. It would help a tonn to avoid clowns.

Moderators? A word?

At one point, Paul tried implementing a reputation score system (so that people could easily tell that posts by Brian P and John Sherrard could be trusted and ones by Pegassus could't). It became a popularity contest where the ratings meant nothing, so he removed it.

You are referring to something along the lines of "like" and "unlike" that is used on Facebook, Youtube, etc. On the 600RR forum they have something like an eBay feedback system which is only based on items you've bought and sold to other members. I think this is something worth looking into.

Also, we should have a dedicated sub-forum for GTAM member reviews, not a single thread.

It should be called fight club.

I've purchased from cbcanada and he's a fair person. If you find the item isn't as described when you see it in person, point out the issues and offer what you feel is fair. Otherwise, if you show interest, work out an arrangement and then show up and offer less, you lack class.

I purchased from another GTAM member, haggled over price before arranging a meet. Item was exactly as described, I was happy to pay what I offered.

If someone mentions obo, then make your offer.

If I showed up and the item doesn't fit or doesn't reflect the condition in the pic or as described, I believe you can offer less or walk.

If I know a seller is going out of their way to bring the item to me, I don't think I could offer less unless it was really not in the condition shown. I might even pay a little extra for the delivery ;)

KIWI - Bought a small hand-help camera from him a few years back. No need to negotiate price as I thought it was a fair deal. I drove out to meet him, we did the deal. Done.

KLRGUY - Bought a bike from me last Fall. We negotiated and reached a deal which included delivery. I received a down payment before delivery to ensure my costs would be covered if he decided to change his mind after I got there with the bike. I delivered the bike, we exchanged money and ownership. Done.

I've done a few deals over the years with GTAM members and have yet to have a bad experience. (Wish I could say the same for Kijiji....)
Don't let one or two bad deals wreck it. There's still good people out there!

It'll turn into ppl bitching at one another...lotta popcorn to be had watching all this...
Do you really want to see this?

Detailed feedback is good but not necessary. I was thinking more of a basic score count - one point at a time for each transaction made.
If you are happy with a purchase from this particular member - leave him a point. If not - don't bother.
This way reputable sellers will have higher score displayed under their names.

Call it a "Trader Score" if you wish.

Wow good memory mate, I cant even think or remember what camera that would have been.

BTW- I sold my (large for me) motorcycle pants today to someone on Kijiji. Guy drove to my place, pants fitted. He paid me my asking price and a done deal. Appreciated that. He got a good price on those pants too :)

Seems like a profile feedback system similar to eBays would be better.. quite a few car forum have them.

I was telling my gf about this thread today. Then the thought occurred to me: maybe the buyers name should be "450Con"

Love that Star Trek shot. "Cooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn".

Might also be because I was raised here (despite not being from Canada originally). I've noticed the haggling comes from mainlanders or middle Easterns with a heavy accent. White folk tend to be the most pleasant to deal with.

I have very little patience though; if somebody can't follow instructions on my ad (as in how to contact me and what info to give), I just roll my eyes and ignore the response.

As much as there are alot of morons buying stuff online I can't agree that its due to a race or culture issue.

I've been through a ton of transactions on kijiji over the years, I can give you a couple of examples of unpleasant 'white people'. One of the most accomodating and helpful guys I have ever dealt with for some high end audio equipment was from mainland China as well.

I still think it is. Some people adapt to new cultures better than others but in Taiwan and China, haggling is encouraged even at retail stores. I'd imagine it's the same for India and other Middle Eastern countries.

It's not like we can walk into Best Buy and haggle....can we? lol
