Gps iphone app please advise

Hello,

I know many ppl use Garmin GPS but they're out of my budget.

I need recommendations for good iPhone apps for:

1) bluetooth voice navigation (I can't keep phone out as last year it overheated under sun and shut off)
2) import GPX files or routes that I create or find on computer google maps etc

Also, I know Garmin and such devices use satellites and are generally reliable to work

BUT if I'm heading to algonquin and out of city areas with no cell reception etc will the iPhone app still work?

Google Maps.

Open the app on your phone and cache the area you will be travelling in. Make sure to do this on WiFi as it will download a lot of data. So long as you do this it won't need a data connection anymore for the entire trip.

Then go to your computer, setup the route you want to take (plot it initially then drag the little buttons around to customize it), then click the "Send Directions To Your Phone" option. A few seconds later that route you plotted will popup on your phone, including the custom routing.

Co-pilot, free unless you want voice directions then its $13. Works well with my Iphone 4s and Sena. Doesn't need a data plan or cell coverage to work. Maps are as good as Garmin, Tom-Tom and Google. Cons - doesn't search using Canada postal code, searching U.S. address requires you change to the state map in which the address is located.
 
I use TomTom app which is $49 with lifetime maps and voice nav mainly for its Winding Roads feature.
It was fine on my iPhone 4

I use CoPilot in Aus - the free version and it works fine. Google maps is attempting to get a wider range but I find it lets me down if you have to switch out for any reason.

I think there are some other new ones out there but co-pilot and TomTom are proven...TomTom got way better on the last upgrade/
 
OP - Google Maps is what you are looking for. In Settings, find "Offline Areas" and select the region you want.

Location service doesn't necessarily require an internet connection on your phone, but def benefit a lot from it. From my understanding, your location can be triangulated either through the cell towers around (or even the routers), or through satellites. If no internet connection, then the phone would try to establish connection via satellites, like the dedicated GPS devices. May not work well if you are deep into the bushes or under a canopy.
 
Gmap is simply totally inadequate without network ...it's a kludge.

Has anybody tried MotoMap? I just got it last fall and only got to use it once so far.

It and Furkot have something going ...I don't need it as yet so haven't bothered but think it's an up and comer.

I am taking note and will try what you guys have recommended to see what works best for me.

Voice navigation is a key feature I'm looking for, especially to be able to use with my Sena.
 
check out maps.me. Used it in Thailand/Malyaysia/Singapore/Canada/Australia and US. It even found some wicked off-road trails in Thailand according to a friend who was doing some serious off-roading there.
 
I love sygic, it allows me to create routes on my computer and transfer them over, also comes preloaded with map for Canada.

TTS is enable with the paid version of Co-Pilot. Voice navigation is a recent add-on with an annual fee. The Text to Speech (TTS) voices are limited but adequate. TTS voice on Iphone/Ipad is better than TTS voices available on Android.
