Gorilla Bead Breaker

if you manually are changing your own rims, they're are going to get scratched to some degree. i can't see that scratching rims so long as you don't bring it down on the rim. it's pretty easy to break a bead with a few well placed pieces of 2x4.

Not true Ive been manually changing for years, and because I use plastic rim protectors I never scratch rims

That bead breaker will all depend on how carefully you use it, if you let the metal contact the rim then it will scratch...If your careful and place it properly and dont let it slip then it cant scratch if you dont let it contact the rims

Is this really useful/necessary?

Not if your asking that question, without suggesting an alternative. If your changing your own tires and dont have a tire machine, then you need something to break the beads to be able to get the tires off the rims....You either buy something like this, make something, or macgyver it

or use your car back tire to brake them by running over the tire
