What you are asking for requires much time and effort, You will have to do your due diligence to research. I for one cannot remember the places we have stayed at , some were good, some so,so, all were expensive though.

Rome is a city on par with Manhattan, so your going to pay.

My wife, had taken a good month or more to prepare and book hotels, when I go on business, I just stay closest to where I need to be.

It all depends on what your requirements are for a hotel and how much you can spend. In September me and my wife stayed at hotel Doria. Fair price, decent location, pretty small room. It was a place to sleep, and that's all. We're not picky people so we weren't disappointed. It's a small family owned hotel and the staff was very friendly. If you're expecting luxury, be prepared to spend $500-$1200 a night.

Was in Rome two weeks ago. Booked b&b which was quite decent. Prices we're decent and it was conveniently located close to everything. Especially useful when you need a mid afternoon shower cuz the weather there is so hot! Nice little restaurants and cafés around there with piazza novana just 5 min away which is an ideal place to be after sunset. Place was called residenza ave Roma just across from castle st.angelo if you wanna check it out.
