Ok So i received a contour roam for christmas and was quite happy. Now i see the original Gopro is on sale and can grab one of these instead and return the contour if i want.
I just want to get some input from you guys and let me know what you think?

keep in mind I have not owned any of these types of cameras before and will mainly use it on my helmet, hopefully my dog lol, and some nature walking with my kids.
i like the ease of buttons on the contour but the gopro has 60fps in 720 as well as more mounting options.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I own a gopro i am very happy with the purchase i made. picture quality is amazing and i can hook it up with my hd tv via hdmi cable and watch my videos in hi def. i am quiet pleased with it that i am intending to buy another one. i have never owned a contour so i can't really comment on them. check out some youtube side by side comparison videos.

I did watch some of the side by side comparisons and the gopro looked much better, but youtube isnt the best for judging video

I have the Contour 1080P and it has 60fps in 720 so I would assume that the ROAM would have it as well?
I personally like the mounting of the contour better as I don't like the top of the helmet mount and on the side the GoPro looks very bulky.

Just my opinion, Cheers

Ok, I cannot comment on the ContourROAM's quality, nor can I comment on an original Gopro's OR the Gopro's 2 quality as I have never seen a non Youtube video of EITHER of them. BUT I can say, that to an average camera person, who is just looking at it for the sake of watching it, every modern helmet camera on the market today looks amazing when watched on your own computer.

I can say that each camera has it's own special features.

GoPro: +: Very tough, waterproof to 60m metres, can shoot 60 fps at 720p, shoots 127 degrees at 1080p, mounts seem more versatile (chesty mount), uses regular SDHC cards which is cheaper than microsd cards from most places (so I have found), interchangeable batteries meaning you can have extra batteries if you run out of juice

GoPro: -: Sounds is crap at high speeds, has a further distance from center of gravity from where you are mounting it which can make it feel heavier, confusing layout that pretty much requires you to have the manual on you at all times with strange codes to switch modes

ContourROAM: +: SUPER easy operation, shoots 125 degrees in 1080p mode, has a longer battery life because of internal battery, closer to the head and sleeker look when it comes to mounting, laser's to double check your aim and point of recording, lighter by 34 grams (feels lighter on the head as well because of the closer position to COG)

ContourROAM: -: Waterpoof only to one metre for 30 minutes so no diving into your pool, NO 60 fps on any shooting mode, the lens sticks out and has no protection and is plastic, making it prone to scratching if it goes flying off your head, extra mounts are EXPENSIVE when it comes to adhesive mounts (20 bucks for a single rotating mount when you can get the GoPro grab bag for like 35 bucks which has 7 or so mounts)

As you can see both have their pro's and cons, I LOVE my Contour 1080, it is awesome as hell, and am going to supplement it with my Gopro Hero 2 when it comes in the mail. Any other questions I will be free to answer. :)

Pic/vid quality aside the go pro is far tougher! A friend of mine got the contour this summer, didn't even get to use it and the contour fell from his bike mount in the pits breaking and becoming useless!!! I have seen more than one go pro bounce off the track at speed and survive.

On the Contour 1080 i crashed and had it break off its mount twice hanging by the leash, HARD crashes driving the camera into the ground. I also raced for another 4 minutes or so before having an opportunity to snap it back into place. Must have been a strange fall.

I ended up returning the contour roam and getting the go pro hero 1. two factors which made up my mind was the removable battery on the gopro and the regular sd as opppse to the micro.
On top of those two major factors for me,I like the gopros multiple mounting options and the fact I can get 60 fps in 720 mode

So far my 9 year old has had alll the fun with it! running around making short movies with his action figures! lol
