Freezing and near freezing temps - which tires?

Changing tires tomorrow....my son will ride the Strom to work on city streets as deep into the season he can ( 10 km or so each way. ).

He's experienced both street and off road and has done this before.

My current Pilot 3 rear has a leak.

Eventually I will put K60 scouts on ( they are arriving tomorrow ).

BUT

I scored a nearly new Pilot 3 for cheap.

I'm thinking the Pilot 3s might actually be better for the low temperature pavement.

He won't ride in snow tho maybe a occasional wet day that used to be snow ( he goes in late so light snow will be turned to wet. )
I just think the Pilot 3 tread might be "stickier" in those conditions than the harder Scouts.

Thoughts???

I honestly don't know the difference in tire compound but, I would knock the tire pressure down a few psi when temps get below 5 C.

Whatever has a soft compound with good siping

Generally, knobbies are not great on wet paved roads, so he'll be most likely better off with the Pilot 3s
My TKC80 knobbies are mud and snow rated (probably more mud than snow), so maybe they are a softer compound for cold temperatures.

I think there was another thread not long ago where someone pointed this out to me.

My buddy ran those on his katana for a winter, he did not like how they felt at all.

This my thinking as well.

In addition, the Scouts are hard compound....they last a long time...not so good for cold traction. I think I'll stick with the Pilot 3s

Good idea

The seems to confirm the PR3s will be softer so better in cold and wet - the Scouts likely harder yet.

I did not change my pressures at all over any of the winters I rode (including during snow storms). Ran 36psi front 38psi rear on my VFR last winter and had no slipping issues (Dunlop Roadsmart 2 tires)

I would think something more like a Pilot Road 3/4 to be honest.
In the motorcycle world, I won't classify that as soft compound

Thanks ..

Have the Pilot 3s so it's that or the Heidenau and I'm coming down on the Pilots side.
I'll put the Scouts on after my Pilots wear out.

I've run my Versys with a scout on the back and distanzia on the front, as well as with a set of PR4's. I couldn't believe the mileage I got out of the Scout, but wet and cold traction really lacked. The PR4's are amazing in wet, and cold only seems to effect them for the first few minutes until they warm a bit. My coldest ride this season so far and what is typically my cut off is 2 deg.
