Follow Along: Milton to Vancouver on an R6

Get an R1.
That's what I want, but insurance will probably argue against that. lol

The super tenere is an idea but I'm more into the sport riding and with only a 1200cc in Canada insurance is probably turning that one down to. :(

Sorry to hear about your luck. I understand your feelings towards ss bikes, they are tons of fun, albeit the expense of your drivers license. After 20 years of riding all kinds of sport bikes. I recently picked up a used vstrom. All I can tell you is its fun. If you like touring all day or all month, pick up the right bike for it. They guys are right, the Yamaha Super Teneree, Vstrom, Bmw GS..... They are all great bikes, and are still a ton of fun on paved roads.
Cheers

I know :p and just give insurance a call, find out what it would be. (although I guess with the accident on the record it won't exactly help a whole lot.)

You could always get another R6.

I'm very fond of the GSXR 750.

Personally, I'd far prefer touring on an SS than a GS type bike.

Good luck with your decisions and hope your hand heals up quick.

Griffin, I agree, personally am more comfortable in an ss position than the more up right seating of the gs.

Thank you everyone for all the get well wishes. Hand is doing ok, went to the doc yesterday and couldn't get an apt at a fracture clinic for over a week, so they sent me to the 'merg, thinking I was going to have to get surgery to reset the bone but ended up with just getting a cast.

Took a look at a 2003 ZX6RR that was in an accident yesterday, was going to take about 1000 to fix up, it was on kijiji for 1500. Looke promising for potential proffit and/or next ride. But, ran the vin thru car fax and it came up "Junk Title" so that's a no go.
If anyone finds a 2000+ SS that needs some minor work done for cheep that I could do over the winter. Post the link here or pm me.

Cheers,
Geoff

This is true. I can't wait to get another bike, my garage is empty. I'm looking for a sport bike I can pick up cheap that needs some work that I can fix myself and either keep or sell down the road. Can't work for a few weeks due to my hand so what I can afford right now is next to nothing :(

Damn = what a shame but at least you got across the continent. Good to survive that on sports bike . Tale to tell for sure.
Bit of adventure you could do without.

I was worried about deer last night riding from Penn to Toronto at 12 am to 4 -
Did not see any and took it very easy anyway.

Get well soon and you'll be back in the saddle.

Next bike??? Burgman 650s survive deer crashes and I have the pics to prove it. :D

All that tupperware and long distance in comfort :D - 500k of twisties yesterday then 300k inc 120k of slab getting home.

Its a nice mix of distance in comfort ( baby Wing ) and twisty fun but maybe a VFR800 or one of the 650 BMW dual sports - all have decently upright seating.

I'd be game for an east coast run next year and I think riding partner as well.

Looks like you hit the deer square on. Glad you got out of that with pretty minor injuries.

I had a similar break in my hand about 15 years ago. Took about 5 weeks before I was functional but mine needed screws to hold it together. Still have them as a reminder of the risks of tobogganing.

Good luck with the bike search.

Macdoc - there is an interesting vid of a sportbike hitting a deer at speed. Cut the deer in half and very limited damage to the bike and the rider was unhurt. The bike didn'tt go down. Something to be said for the striker hitting at high velocity. Note that I'm not recommending hitting the throttle when you are likely to hit a deer but it does say something about survivability on a bike when hitting wildlife.

Yeah - square on. The guy I got my seat from hit the doe square on at 60 mph- killed the deer - he kept it upright and rode it home. Insurance wrote the bike off...and he was 67. Said it came out of nowhere and he had no time to brake.

My take is deer are so hard to predict that unless you really have time for avoidance/braking - take the hit instead of extreme maneuvers which might cause a more dangerous crash

something to be said for tupperware :D

Wow that's some insane stuff, glad he was ok, the scooter doesn't look that bad. Considering.
The deer I hit was bigger than that one, and I braked when I saw it shoot out and hit his square in the gut. I went over top of the handlebars and deer, and I blacked out. Next thing I kno is I woke up on the road with a cop over me and a hellicopter landing near by.

Yeah the rider said he thought a larger animal might have been a different outcome.
I always find it interesting that riders go up vertically - that is a huge reduction in impact energy.
The Burgman also weighs a fair bit more than your bike and he was not diving as he had no time to brake.

Each time it's different but a broken finger is a small price.

I've seen many deer riding as I ride a lot a night but none in "near miss" situations.
But hell a doe ambled right across Snake Road in front of us at noon last weekend - THAT could have been a different outcome had we been just a second or two different but once more we had the time to see and brake easily. Same thing last year 3 ambled across a rural road midday.

Backroads with finger of forest on either side is a go easy.

But sometimes as with you and the Burgman 650 rider ( I got the Daylong seat on a deal which is why I have the photos :D )
there is no warning.
I always wonder why such smart animals as deer get hit - make you wonder what we DON'T see along the road.

I've hit a raccoon and it was just a small bump and crunch but might have been worse on a lighter machine.

What time of day did you hit??? ( might have missed it )
