(First time) Car Insurance Help

EDIT: He's 22 now.

I have a friend who got his G1 license when he was 16 (got his full G about 2 years ago).

His family has never had a car (they live downtown and never needed one) and so he has never been insurance even as an occasional.

Now he needs a car but because he's a one star driver (never insured before) he's getting quoted almost 900/month for even like a 2003 corolla from TD/RBC insurance.

Can any of you here recommend any insurance companies that will be decent for first time insurance of 'new' drivers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's going to be a lot, but certainly not $900/mo. Try some non-standard insurers like Pafco or Jevco. It's in your friend's best interest to quote with as many companies as possible.

Yes, around $300-400 is more likely.

I don't know about new drivers but I do call a lot of insurance companies and personally, the best quotes I got for my cars was with Belair and Desjardines.

Tell him to consider dropping comprehensive and collision if he hasn't. Or increase the deductibles. I don't necessarily recommend this but it will lower the cost of insurance.

Also get him to check what kind of discount he would get for winter tires and anti-theft device.

Does he have that Corolla already? If not, tell him to look at the lists of cheapest cars from insurance perspective. Corolla's generally pretty good but there are some cars like Escorts, Tauruses, Impalas, Elantras or most minivans that should be even cheaper.

Whether you have 20 years of experience or 0 years of experience, you will be charged the same Comprehensive rate (since it doesn't vary by experience). Depending on the car and the financial circumstance, I generally don't recommend going without Comprehensive unless its a beater. Comprehensive is relatively cheap.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll let him know to only put 1,000,000 liability and see how much that runs per month.

Does anyone here have contact information for desjardins or belair brokers?

Or any broker that represent a few companies--so we can get a few quotes from the same person?

You're probably right in this case Viffer. A 2003 Corolla is worth about $4000-5000 I'd say.
I usually buy my cars dirt cheap so I do without.

Yeah . . . it all depends on the person's financial situation. Losing a $5000 car might be a very big deal to a student, but an easy loss to absorb for someone else.

try dejardins they insured my civic pretty cheap a couple years ago... 17>male>G2 was something like 3800, currently on a golf and its 2555.

Desjardines, my friend just got her G2 and she's 19, never been insured, 200 and something per month on a corolla
