First 1000 km inspection

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forumn and am planning to stick around :) . So I picked up my first bike last week, a 2013 Ninja 300, and have almost 500 km on it already. I have no experience with servicing motorcycles or anything but am considering doing all the servicing myself instead of taking it back to the dealer. Is that a good idea? Or maybe I should take it to the dealer for the first inspection at 1000 km then do the servicing myself after that? Any advice?

First inspection at the dealer. Helps with any warranty issues... If you do it yourself their is no written record of it. Do all maintenance yourself but keep the parts receipts as proof

Bite the bullet... first inspection to the dealer... any dealer that sells kawis... after that is fine doing stuff yourself.

I am in the same boat as you. Picked up my bike Monday, already over 500 kms. I've been a mechanic for a long time but I'll be taking it to the dealer for at least the first service if not for it's first whole season.

First service is all u need to stay in warranty... it sucks cuz all they do is change oil n filter n "check all screws" n bill your ***

Well, if you think that by changing the oil you will damage your engine then go ahead and waste money at the dealership.
I would not do any serious repairs myself if I don't feel qualified but other than that, a dealership would have to prove that you're at fault if anything were too happen down the line.
There's zero obligation to go back for first or any service thereafter. Contrary to what your dealership will tell you. Thankfully they do not manufacture the bike, just sell it.

I'm at 800 now and decided I'll be getting the first service at the dealership just because I can't afford to mess up. I kind of want to see what exactly they do and inspect. Is it likely that they will allow me to do this?

no. You won't be allowed into the garage area due to liability issues. All they do is oil change, make sure nuts and bolts are still tight, check fluids...it'll all be on your invoice. Expect to spend 180-220, its not necessary to go to the dealer but the having done the first service there helps with any warranty issues that may arise.

I know it is too late for most of you out here. However, sometimes when negotiating a price, ask if they will throw in the first service for free.
