You'll obviously find the bike with less torque at the beginning of the power range compared to v-twin, but it's fairly commuting-friendly - keep it in 2nd-3rd and you'll be fine on the streets.
I never had a problem with torque on the f4i riding in Toronto, my back complained a lot about riding in that setting. I think the gearing is a bit different compared to the cbr rr of those production years.
I found it had good low and high range, but lacked mid range punch.
There is nothing wrong with F4i low-end power. What I meant was V-twin has tons of torque from the very beginning, being very quirky to me personally, but inline four engine is much smoother with power/torque delivery. If you want to change sprockets, there is tons of info on CBRforum.com . F4i is the same from 01 till 06 (they changed frame color and seat type from split to banana type in 04 when 600RR came out).
Never been on a v-twin but the F4i is an excellent commuter for a sport bike. Plenty of usable power in the low and mid range (stock gearing). Seating position is comfortable. I found the seat itself ok... not any worse than most SS bikes I've been on but a corbin seat was on my list to buy before I sold it. It's got lots of room inside the tail to boot.
I've only ridden the stock F4i a couple of times, but I remember enjoying riding my own more around the city. It does rev a little higher at the same speed and the speedo was off 14%, but it was worth it for me. If you have to change the chain/sprockets then you may as well do the -1+2.
I had an F4i for a few years and the bike was fantastic, very easy to ride and very solid in terms of reliability. Your looking at a completely different type of power plant so if your big on torque it may take some time to get used to. It's not a monster motor by any means and has been known as being rather dull as the power delivery is so linear and smooth. I'll have to agree that the seat was nothing short of crap but I still managed 500-600km day rides.
Which one fits YOUR bike? I don't think they have one, you may have to look at a different brand, or get your stock seat custom stuffed with memory foam by this guy in Whitby, 905-431-3515
