Ducati Monster 821

The 696, 796 and 1100 Evo will be phased out soon. Too much overlap in the product line. Is the Streetfighter still available? The last Ducati with a dry clutch.

Unless Ducati have a replacement for the 696, I think it will stay.

The 795/796 and the 1100 will be replaced with the 821 and 1200, I assume by next year.

The streetfighter is still available but only with the 848 engine. The 1098 engine is no longer available.

Overpriced you say? Do tell. What is it that's made to compete directly with it and performs as good or better than a monster that is cheaper? New 696 at the show was 10k from gp. I wouldn't exactly call that unreasonable

I would take an FZ-09 over the 696 in a heartbeat.

The 821 engine in the new Hypermotard makes a claimed 110 hp stock. It sounds great and the service intervals have doubled over previous models.

All these model changes, what are the chances of getting OEM parts way down the road? Is that even important? This moto candy is great but throwaway.

Although it looks ok, I am a bit disappointed about it. No sssa , liquid cooled and over complicated design. Just doesn't feel like the original monsters. I guess I would rather get the 1200s, but at these prices there are better deals to be had ie tuono, triumph triple or any jap naked.
In any case I will be holding on to my 796 forever. I'm curious to see what's going to happen to the 696 as that is their bread and butter

Fully agree.. everything they're making is getting a bump up. They need something smaller to gain the customers who insurance would hammer for anything over 600 cc. (i.e. the 20 something crowd)

This is Ducati's road strategy. They don't want to be a bike everyone dreams about and everyone buys. It's more like a bike everyone dreams about and only some can afford.

Speed triple, Aprilia Shiver, and I call BS on the Ducati claim of 80hp from a two-valve, air-cooled twin 700 (It's not like they don't make up these numbers). Plus, in a few years, the service will bend you over, assuming nothing breaks. I doubt you can get an ABS 696 for $10K.
Even on face value, the 696 quality is not obvious. An FZ8 is a better buy.
They sound great and handle well, but the overall costs of 5 year ownership are very high.

Bigger Monsters, like the 1200 confuse me. Riding a naked with that much power on a highway would be painful. These sell well in Europe and large urban centres as city bikes, which makes sense.

Are these comments (in bold) from personal experience?

I used to LUST after a Monster 900 back in the day. Not huge power, but sexy as hell and excellent handling. By the time they released the M695, I wanted to pull the trigger as the power on the 695 was almost the same (on paper anyway) as the original 900 and without the annoying sounding dry clutch. Sadly I was not in a position financially to buy one. Then, when the did the big re-design with the 696, my Ducati boner went away. Ugly. Ugly. C'est la vie.

That's kind of like apples to oranges. If they were the same size I'd get it but they're two totally different bikes to ride.

I'm looking at price point and what you get for your money. Both have unique motors, (ie. not inline 4), and both are nakeds. But the Yamaha blows away the small displacement Monster for less money...

But looks like a dog's breakfast.

Yeah, it's not the prettiest bike out there for sure. I think the FZ-07 is styled more nicely.

That being said, I got to demo the 900 and it is a great bike. Comfortable and really fun to ride.

Man why did they take out the single side swing arm!!!
Ruined it!
