He apparently hit the guy once, with his fist, no weapons.

The simple answer was because the driver turning left had no reasonable expectation that by doing so he/she would kill someone.
Ok, you give someone a push, they fall off the side of a curb and smack their melon on the concrete. They die. You get manslaughter. What's the difference of a car turning left? You had no intention of killing or even hurting the other person with a push. A driver doesn't intend to kill a person by turning left.
They get off with careless or something along those lines, you go to jail.
Where's the justice in that?
