I have not been asked to remove my helmet; however, I open my modular helmet and remove my sunglasses.
They like to be able to see your eyes while they are talking to you because eye movement is a large part of reading whether you are telling the truth.

Regardless if they ask you or not, my guess would be to take it off as an 'act of good faith' otherwise if they wanted they could make you have a long day. You remove it and it comes acrossed as you have nothing to hide and allows them to fully see your face.

Yeah they've switched so you cant get into the country without a passport but im sure the border guard wont bother with wanting to see your face or anything, they're pretty relaxed like that. I'd bet the first thing they say to you is "please remove your helmet" and if not how hard is it to say "would you like for me to remove my helmet?

You might as well say "hey occifer... would you like to see the drugs in my back pocket?"
Don't ask, just remove it. Also turn off the bike when you stop. Its all an act of good faith.

Last time I crossed the border to the US they didn't ask me to remove mine. However that was many moons ago waaaaayyyyyyyy before you needed a passport to make a land crossing. All you needed was a drivers license and a birth certificate. I was also with 5 or 6 of my buddies and we were all on bikes. I think he may have sped up the process to get us all across.

All the times I've crossed I had to remove my helmet. Except for this one time when coming back to the Canadian side they didnt require it.

I ask every time, and so far, every time they've asked me to remove my full face - Usually I'm going through NEXUS lines so that could be part of it.
In places where it's a regular, non NEXUS crossing, my routine is to ride up, turn off the bike (easier to hear) and ask if they want the helmet off. Sometimes they'll tell me to remove my helmet when I get to the booth without me even asking. Make sure your sunglasses are already removed.
If you arrive at the booth, friendly and with a smile, they will many times treat you the same way. Arrive at their booth with a loud pipe and blip the throttle - you may get a very thorough once over inside...

I use the NEXUS line too. I always ask if they would like me to remove my helmet and usually they require it but the odd time they say don't worry about it. I find crossing on a bike has less hassles than in a car. Maybe because on a motorcycle there's space to hide the fruits of your cross border shopping spree.

Only if you have the enhanced drivers license - it's the same price as the NEXUS and with NEXUS, you get dedicated lanes on land and when flying to breeze through checkpoints.
