Circumstances of the INJURIES I Sustained & Survived While Riding a Bike

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

Really? A pine cone?

Either way, I'm glad there wasn't any major damage and that you're ok. (for the most part)
What kind of sliders do you have?

Woodcraft.

I'm still raging, I can't believe a pine cone made me drop the bike! I wish it was a squirrel or something, then I could take pictures of it's dead corpse >=(

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

I doubt a pine cone made you fall..

Run over one while turning at low speeds and see what happens....keep your foot near the ground though.

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

It is possible that a squirrel left the pine cone there.
I say you find that squirrel, and take pictures of it!

Glad you're alright. I should get sliders too, birds and bees are after me.

Doesn't surprise me. I've heard of people hitting slightly larger than normal pieces of gravel and going down. Crushed pop cans. Think there was one where the guy ran over a flattened box while turning and leaning and low sided.

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

If it happened during a turn then yes, it's quite possible. Pine cone attack.

Ran over a pine cone this morning in a parking lot while turning into a parking spot.

Frame sliders saved nearly everything except for some minor scratches on my handlebar end, mirror, clutch lever and rearset peg. Knee is road rashed (was wearing regular jeans), Handroid palm guards are kinda scratched. Ego is also bruised.

............................pine cones are my arch nemesis now. I am kicking every single one I see.

They need to put up signs.

Beware of pine cones lol

Yup, I could easily see that happening at low speeds. At higher speeds you have the gyroscopic effect of the wheels to help stabilize you. At low speeds it becomes all your balance. Upset that, and down you go.

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

Remember the old saying: "There are 2 kinds of bikers; those that have fallen off and those that haven't fallen off yet"

Not always true....I've got over 40 years on the road without a crash but currently still recovering from a front wheel washout on the KLR650 that slammed my shoulder into the ground pretty hard when the peg dug in.

Most of the issues I've had off road are either worn tires or lack of attention or both.

I've got an achy knee from a decades ago encounter with a large branch trying to bend my knee the wrong way....was on the trials bike and just misjudged....
The last one was a bit tired, downhill on green moss and lost the front end on the KLR - with the new tire my mechanic told me I needed - might not be aching 7 weeks later.

Worn tires are risky on the road as well - a few near front tire washouts on some hot tar snakes on the Gillies convinced me to get a new front.
Unfortunately the better off road front tire wears a lot quicker and I didn't replace it.....so now I hurt

Take away.
Keep your tires in good nick.
Pay attention to stuff like tar snakes, painted lines etc....
Off road experience is good for road riders.

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

It may have been this squirrel responsible

That's it! Adding violent squirrels to the already existing list of banned hazards: dancing turtles and pine cones.

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

I was riding up a hill in the left lane at about 70 km/h, around 3 months after buying my first bike.

The car was in the right lane slightly ahead of me. The driver suddenly remembers that she's a nurse, and she's going to work, and the hospital is on her left... right now! She jumped into the left lane (directly in front of me) and hammered the brakes, stopping to make the left.

I panicked and hit both brakes, trying for the first oncoming lane which was clear, but locked the rear, inducing a low side to the left. The bike went under the back end of the car and caused enough damage to write it off (my Honda Nighthawk basically mated with a Honda Civic). I can only imagine that I jumped just prior to impact as I flew past the car on the left side (the driver reported feeling the impact and, as she was looking left to make the turn, I Superman'ed past her window). I hit the hill I had been going up and thankfully rolled to a stop (seemingly forever) rather than sliding, which was good as I was only wearing a military combat uniform that provided NO protection from abrasion. I got up and ran off the highway.

I ended up with a 3rd degree separation of my left shoulder, several rather interesting muscle tears and rips (one of which still makes the front of my right shin appear to have a spine and another which causes piercing pain in the back of my left shoulder after certain repeated movements), and some light rash.

Looking back at the accident 25 years later;
- I had gotten into an argument with a co-worker shortly before the accident... was my mind somewhere else? Never ride mad.
- I've become a much better, safer rider because of the accident
- I rarely use my rear brake at anything over parking lot speeds
- My ATGATT mentality was born that day too (I was guilty of wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals to ride to the beach prior to that day).
- I'm nervous every time I have a fresh tank of gas on board; I'd JUST filled the damn bike when I wrote it off. **** :)

That first one is more important than many people think. I've gotten to the point where I won't ride, if I'm not mentally 100%.

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

Having said that she was a nurse, did she provide you with a CPR? ;)
Glad you got out of this alive.

0 collisions, 0 injuries but a bunch of downs...Full leathers FTW!!

Liked it just fine. If you prefer I could put it back and issue the infraction for filter bypassing ;)

Re: The INJURIES I survived while riding a bike

Everything for me is off-road related. I would for sure have a few pavement falls if it wasn't for agressive riding in the dirt years before I got on the street.

Last summer broke a rib on the right side after washing out on a very slippery downhill off camber turn (was so slippery you couldn't even stand on the hill).
Broken rib on the left side after being taken out on in the first corner. Had my head run over, and then my chest and then my pelvis. Got up, finished the moto on adrenaline and being angry. Finished the rest of the race day but I was pretty sore.

A few concussions from having my head runover/hit. One of those caused some temporary blindness in one eye. And being the awesome medical professional that I am, I just "walked" it off.

Multiple sprains, a million bruises and some scars from the pointy parts bikes have and falling on them. From April to October I am nursing some type of injury.

Most recent is developing a degenerative condition in my back due to all the hard impacts over the years. Working on getting myself back to racing, but it sucks that it might have to come to an early end...

A buddy of mine caught a peg while scrubbing a jump 2 weeks ago. Sent him flying and he landed with his abdomen on the peg of his bike (bike was flat to the ground) and it eviscerated him. His dad was the first one to him and he was apparently sitting there "calm" holding his guts in place. He was released for home a couple days ago but his riding season is over.
