Chain Lube suggestions for a long trip

Leaving for my cross US trip in under 30 days and just trying to get everything sorted, the question of chain lube came to mind. Now I clean & lube my chain on a regular basis at home with a spray on lube but we'll be doing anywhere from 750 - 1000km a day on this trip so we'll have to clean & lube daily. Got me thinking what would be the best product to use or does it even matter?

Would it be better to use a spray, paste or wax ? I will for sure be using a spray cleaner to hopefully blast as much dirt out of the chain as possible.

If anything I'll bring a spray on lube, but figured I'd asked to see if anyone had a similiar issue on a trip.

Small (4 oz.) squeeze bottle of DuPont Chain-Saver. I know that Lowes carries the 14 oz. spray cans....I think they should also have the small squeeze bottles.
 
I 2nd this, its amazing stuff. Make sure you clean you chain as much as possibly prior to switching to this stuff to make sure its working at its best. Your chain will look dry all the time just make sure you keep reapplying it every 500km or so. Amazing at keeping dirt off your chain when other lubes just grab it.

When i'm on the road, I use WD-40 for cleaning my chain. Spray on to wet, agitate with a small paint brush (cut the bristles short so they're more stiff), spray to rinse and wipe off with a scott towel. Apply chain lube afterwards. It's quick and effective for when you're doing high mileage days.
 
This cleans all around the chain and really gets in there, works really well but to some a bit pricey. If you really want to scrub away with a brush kerosene dose the job

Agreed, but I find I don't have to use to much. A can lasts me about 1/2 -3/4 of a season if you perform regular chain maintenance you seem to have to use less cleaner...go figure :lmao:
 
Admittedly a little off topic, but it caught my eye in your post. I don't know if you've done a 1000km day on a bike before, but unless you have a really comfortable seat and are used to serious endurance riding, that may be a little ambitious. Especially if you are riding all day before and after as part of a larger trip, because it'll really wear you down.

That's over 8 hours straight at 120kph. In other words, zero traffic, stop lights, fuel stops, meal breaks, bathrooms, bad weather, mechanical problems, or anything else that slows you down. Definitely no sightseeting. On a big trip there's ALWAYS stuff that slows you down lol.


So just a friendly suggestion... If you feel you absolutely must plan for a 1,000km day, budget in a short next day and have an alternate plan in case you don't make it as far as you wanted. It's not worth riding yourself to exhaustion and dying because you weren't alert enough to avoid a turtle crossing the road.
 
I'll agree with the Chain Saver, not as good as the old Multi Use but still decent. The fact that it's cheap and readily available seals the deal.

On the road, I don't care too much about keeping the chain clean, just lubed every 1k km or so. Once in a while I'll give it a wipe after applying the Chain Saver which takes most of the dirt off, then reapply.
 
+1 on chain saver stuff.

Only stuff I use EXCEPT when rosey toes decided to lube my chain with his stuff. He reassured me a few times his stuff does not fling off. By the time I got home I had more lube on my tire than on the chain. Took me a while to clean it. While that really ****** me off, that stuff worked really well on my civic door locks that were seized. I tried all kind of penetrating oils and they all failed.

I hear you I've done big trips before but our days are open. We will have some ride all day days and some good sightseeing on others. It's wide open I was just painting the worst case.

Every time I use this stuff it always leaks. I'm gonna try the multi purpose (blue can) see if it's any better.

There was a post sometime last season saying not to use the one in the blue can anymore as it doesnt contain some chemical which is a necessity for chain lube or contains something that it shouldnt have.
