Ceramic Coating....

Hi everyone.

I have a 77 cb550 and the 4 into 2 exhaust was painted with high heat paint maybe 2 years ago and it's starting to come off in certain places (at the top mostly). I'm thinking I want something a bit more permanent and I thought ceramic coating would be the best option.

That being said I'm looking for someone (preferably downtown) who can do this. I'm having a really hard time finding someone who can do the job and gets good reviews. I'd also like to be able to drop the bike off or have it picked up versus having to remove the exhaust myself.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Try Brightside Coatings.

They are a coating shop ... not a mechanic shop. You will be expected to bring the piece you want coated "loose", not attached to a bike ...

It should be a simple job to take the exhaust off that bike, unless you snap a stud off in the cylinder head.

Only had experience dealing with Fireball Coatings; I can't recommend it though. had the pipes done, the coating on the elbows disintegrated and left them rough and pitted looking within one season. Rest of the job held up. But the answer was "bring them in and I'll redo them at half price". My answer was 'no'; would rather move on if they can't stand by their work and just get it done right. Didn't think I should have had to pay twice.

Are you totally sold on the ceramic?
I always thought there was a good reason why most exhausts were chromed or stainless steel.

I had pipes done by Mike at Brightside about 2 years ago. They have stood up really well. Very happy with them.

If the pipes have been used a chromer will typically not touch them as they will mess up the bath.

Thanks for all the info guys. Exhaust was dropped off to Rice Rocket this past weekend. I should have it back within a week. I'll keep you guys updated once I get everything back.

What's the good reason other then looks?

Cost versus benefit, at the OEM level. "Most" OEM exhausts might be stainless or chromed but there are certainly many that are coated. If an OEM exhaust pipe is black rather than shiny, it's coated. If a shiny surface was specified in the design then polished stainless or chrome plating will achieve a better shine. Lots of bikes have black exhaust system parts, and the most cost effective way to do that is via coating.

So I got my pipes back from Rice Rocket and they did a great job. Hopefully these are as durable as everyone says. It took them a bit longer than they promised but overall I'm happy with the experience.
