California Superbike School

I am going to be in California for about a month in the summer time, and I was considering taking one of their courses. I just wanted to see if anyone has taken courses there and what their experience was like. It looks very professional. I won't be too surprised if no one has, but I just had to ask.

I was planning on doing it in Ontario before, but I just made plans to go out west for a good chunk of the summer and I figured I may as well do something fun out there.

Took the level one course at Infinion about 3 years ago when they were still using Kawi ZX6 and then the level 2 course at Streets of Willow about 2 years ago on the BMW 1000RR...fabulous school...I would highly recommend it. You can take the 2 day school but I found that pricey. Just took a one day course each time. Now I think they are around $675 for the day with their bike and I paid $75 to rent the gear. Helmets were new and the rest was good but I did find the leather suits a little uncomfortable and non vented. Being Canadian and just arriving during a bad winter I could have used a vented suit.
Planning on taking another level later this year at New Jersey or maybe VIR.

Thanks for the input BimmerMike! I was thinking exactly the same thing, that their 2-3 day courses are much more expensive than just taking the 1 day. I'm glad to know that you can do it in stages so I can plan my trips to include a day or two here and there. Just to be able to be trained on such a famous course (and each time you go you can pick a different course), and the bikes you learn on are close enough to the bikes I would most likely own (not a smaller bike), is one of the biggest reasons I wanted to take my lessons at this school. Since you have been twice and there are obviously different locations to choose from, did you notice much of a difference in bikes/instructors quality? I was hardly expecting too many responses but thank you for yours, I am going to book something in the next day or two.

I took both my courses in California at 2 different tracks and about a year apart. Mostly it was the same group of instructors, first guy at Infinion was great..the next instructor seemed a little fresh and wasn't quite as good but still no regrets. The bikes were top shelf..can't imagine them being any better. The group as a whole is incredibly professional and although I don't have much experience with bike schools I am very familiar with car racing schools having taking several over the years and working with a few others. Kieth Code could teach a course on how to run a school...they give you full value.
Word of advise...when you take the level two..make sure your legs are in good shape...I wasn't and between the heat and the hanging off the slide bike...I was exhausted. Might even take level 2 again to make sure I picked up everything they were trying to teach me.
Another thing to remember is that although it is cool to take the course on a famous race track that is not nessesarily the best track for a school. I did ask the instuctors about that and they mentioned that fact. For example late in the year they usually go to Laguna and all of the instructors I spoke with said that it is cool to go round and thru the corkscrew but it doesn't make for the best training.
Streets of Willow is their home track and they also have all their special training bikes there. Infinion was also good so don't let my advice put you off.

One more thing...they usually have a photographer there and he sells you prints at the end of the day...he will also sell you a CD with all the shots...I think it was $90. Next time I will tell him early in the day that I will be buying the disc and he will make sure he takes extra shots.
If you PM with your email I can send you a few pics.

Thanks again for the detailed info. I like to know as much as I can before I do anything new. But watching Twist of the Wrist 2 and seeing that slide bike and the way it goes out from under you in the wet.. good advice. The legs thing I would have never thought. Ill make sure I do more leg days at the gym.. lol

Sonnythebull - Thanks for your input as well. Even though its short, its positive, which basically makes this a sure thing for me.

When I get done with the course I'll post the pictures of the event in this thread.. later in the summer.

What dates/locations are you looking at ?

I am opened to whichever dates and location but I was probably thinking end of July at Thunderbolt Raceway as thats what the have available for a back to back course.

What were you thinking?

Yeah same. I was wanting to get into the one in May, but it has been filled up for a while now.

I will PM you my number. If your interested in going together shoot me a text or call me and we can discuss it more and try to coordinate something.

Got it. Once i get some track time booked, and have a look at my work schedule i ll have a better answer.

Thats why I was thinking July because I want to do the same and Thunderbolt is the closest to us. I would love to check out Laguna Seca or even Vegas but dont think those are available options.

Hi there, I'm a coach with the school and have been for the past 8 years, if you have any specific questions about the school then please let me know and I'll do my best to answer! It's a lot of fun and you will learn a ton!

Cheers,
Misti

Hey Misti, I took the level 1 school about 4 years ago in the spring at Infinion and then level 2 a couple of years ago at Willow, what level do you teach? can't say that I remember you.

As coaches we teach all levels of students and rotate around with doing on track and off track coaching. In a regular day we will usually have students in all four levels of courses or we might be working off track with just level 4's. I worked a few years as a full time coach where I did all the school dates each year but there are a few full time coaches and lots that do a few days here and there when they can manage them. With two kids now and the fact that I live in Vancouver Canada it's much harder for me to find time to do the schools. I did a few weekends in Vegas the past three years and I will be going to the Ridge in Washington in July.

Tips for riders? Try to pick one riding skill to learn about and work on during your ride and only do one thing at a time. Most people try to make too many changes or ride around trying to do too many things at once. Pick something, like throttle control and work on it until you feel you have it under control then pick something else.

What are some skills/techniques that you guys currently find yourself working on, or that you should be working on??
