Buying track bike.. do you have to take it in to MTO to transfer ownership?

If you buy a track bike with an ownership/clean title. Do you have to take it in to the MTO and get a new ownership for it/register it with them etc?

I'm assuming you would just say it's not street legal (no safety) but I suppose you'd still have to pay the tax?

Thanks

Up to you. since you are not registering it and riding on the street you don't have to but:

Some people say that they would like the tittle under their name.
Some people don't care and would say it is stupid to pay for the tax
Some people say that cops go to the track and ask for registrations
Some people will say that you have to in case you take the bike to the states
Some people say better safe than sorry
Some will say **** it

I have never put a track bike under my name, my current race bike has a clean tittle and i got the registration but i am not switching it, TO ME there is no reason to pay for the tax.

You should always get it put in your name but you can say it i only paid so much because i got it as is. They will probably just put unfit on ownership, which means you can't get a 'T' sticker to ride it around temporary while you go and find a shop to safety it. Never know what the previous owner will do right.

Or just have a discussion with the sell for a lower price? ;)

What happens when you want to sale the bike. You will have to pay the tax to get it transfered into your name, before you sell, no?

For a track bike? my last track bike had a savaged title and was sold that way.

I am not selling my race bike ever and if i do it will be to the same guy that sold it to me

No u can sell it without a registration if u wanted. Just a bill of sale. Some buyer won't even be interested in just a bill of sale tho.

If it has a clean title it seems a waste to sell it without the registration.

Legally, yes (HTA s.11(2)). Without the safety it would be branded as "unfit".

However to pay tax on a private sale for an item that won't be registered for the street is ridiculous (actually, it's ridiculous that you have to pay tax on a private sale even if you ARE putting it on the street). Some of the above suggestions (trade, low-ball) may be an option to save on the taxes as there's no price list for the MTO to reference for bikes as they have for cars.

Likely never an issue to not register it (other than it being largely an un-enforced offence) although when/if you sell it, it's technically "curb-siding" and that's illegal too.

Where it CAN become an issue is with theft, crossing the border, or any other situation where you have to prove ownership.

I bought my bike as a street bike and converted it. I paid the tax and had it registerd in my name. My previous bike I didn't have it put into my name, it had never been registerd. If you want to pay the tax and feel more comfortable then do it.

Just go an transfer it. You'll have to pay 20$ for the UVIP and they'll have you write how much you paid on the top corner of it. Write what you want, and pay the silly tax on whatever you wrote.

After all this, you will be the rightful and legal owner of it.

Well I've only paid $500 for all my street bikes to the seller (traded a lot of stuff in exchange)... so perhaps I can negotiate this track bike for only $100 due to the state it's in.. since it's an unrideable/dead/junk bike.

Might as well.

Thanks for the info guys.

The back of any Ontario ownership/registration states "The new owner (buyer) must present this Application for Vehicle Transfer to notify the ministry of the change of ownership of the vehicle within 6 days of the date of purchase."
Moreover, seller should be mighty uncomfortable if there's a chance the bike is on track somewhere and still registered in his name - potential liability issues and all that, just so buyer can avoid paying hst when the ownership is transferred.

Yup, HTA s.11(2).

A good point, and why you're able to go to the MTO to have a vehicle you've sold (but hasn't been registered in someone else's name for whatever reason) as "sold". Although I don't know how much water that would hold in civil court, situation dependent.

If I go to the MTO, will they require me to purchase the UVIP there? Then won't the seller have to sign it as well? That part is kind of confusing.
