Buying gear.. Bike show vs USA

I picked up my first bike a few weeks ago, and now am in the search for gear. I`m on a student budget, but at the same dont wanna be getting cheap crap that won't protect me in case I need it. I've heard the bike show is a great place to catch some deals, but I'm headed down to NYC in a few weeks, and US prices are usually much better than Canadian. Where am I likely to catch the better deal? Anyone shopped for gear in the states?

You will find much better deals in NYC.
But also go to the MC show as there a few bargains to be had there too.
Go to the one at the international center in March.

I like to support our Cdn dealers whenever i can,but when buying a helmet or jacket that i know the size of for sure,i'll order from SBTG (http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/StoreFront.bok) in Michigan.I buy Scorpion helmets from them regularly.They ship usps as well which cuts out the duty and brokerage fees.
