Buying a used motorcycle in Ontario

I'm about to purchase a used motorcycle from someone off Kijiji. There's a couple weird things with this sale that I'd like clarified though. The seller is a student who bought the vehicle from someone else but never got around to riding it or registering/insuring. So technically the bike is still in the previous owners name. He has the vehicle permit where the previous owner filled out the ownership transfer part and left the new owner section blank.

Would I be able to just take this permit, fill in my info, and take it to service ontario to have it registered under my name? Or does the previous owner need to sign the bill of sale in the UVIP? (There is no UVIP provided with this sale either, I have to go get it myself)

Technically, the seller has to get that UVIP for you. If doesn't want to get it, you really need to make sure that there are no liens registered against that bike - that's one good thing coming out of UVIP. Regarding registration, yes, you should be able to fill out your info, as long as previous seller signed the paperwork. Seller doesn't need to sign UVIP.

If you do that, make sure to get a separate bill of sale that clearly indicates who you actually bought the bike from. In the event of a dispute, you'll have evidence that you bought it from him and not the owner before him.

I also recommend always getting the uvip from the mto yourself. That way you have the most up to date info. If the seller provides the uvip then check the date of issue.

Thanks for the replies. I got the UVIP, everything looks good, and got the safety as well. But then when the seller gave me the vehicle permit with application for transfer, it turns out he filled out the buyer part with his own info... I don't know if this will give me trouble at the service ontario centre

They will give you a sticky sheet, It's basically a duplicate of the back of the ownership where you put your information on and stick it over the old info.

As AF4iK said, make sure to bring a bill of sale to the service Ontario centre just in case. Have a seller's contact info + license number, your info, price, VIN number and signatures. (they will make you pay taxes on the declared price).

I have bought and sold a bike under same circumstance. It ussually happens when the buyer buys with the purpose of reselling and does mot want to pay the hst. Or the buyer buys the bike and decides they dont bother with it.
